They were the feared ones, the criminals who really ran Carandiru, Brazil's largest correctional facility: Ebony, an honourable thief and respected leader; Highness, a smooth operator with two families to support; Ezequiel; n ex-surfer turned crack addict; Dagger, a brutal killer with God in his side. They were among the prison's elite, the select few who ruled Carandiru by their own codes and laws. Saw this at a festival in March. It's a great accomplishment for the director which must have been made at great toil and sacrifice. As a film it's a pretty wild ride, too. I hope there are subtitles for the extras on this one.

I'm not sure if this is off-topic but, even though i liked the movie a lot, I wouldn't recommend this as a blind buy.

I think the pace of the movie is not for everyone. but that's just my opinion

We have taken a look at the July 27th UK release of the Brazilian prison drama Carandiru here.

Snippet:
Carandiru won’t be a film for everyone, some may find the somewhat free flowing structure problematic. Indeed I did, on my first watch. Whilst the sequence involving the riot and subsequent massacre contain some of its best material, it’s best not to think of it as a movie about the riot, but as one about prison life in general. It is an excellent movie, convincingly acted, sensitively directed and is well worth your time.

Expensive DVD in the US and UK!

I'm buying the Columbia TriStar Region 4 Brazil 2 disc SE. English subtitles on the main film. Not on the extras apparently.
