Zatoichi

I know that Miramax has the rights to this movie. Is it safe for me to order it from overseas without getting in trouble?

Seriously, order anything you want... almost everyone here has ordered from overseas at one time or another. Just make sure you have the hardware...

If you are really into the movie, I highly recommend the Japanese R2 version since it has tons of extras (but not subtitled).

Do not wait for the Miramax one because it is almost a given that the film will be cut, dubbed, bastardized, and presented with an all new rap soundtrack. The film itself has some incredible musical numbers and it would be a shame to see the captivating dance sequences under the tune of P.Diddy.

surprisingly it only looks like Miramax's only change to the film was the titile: "The Blind Swordsmen: Zatoichi"

The Korean version is basically a port of the Japanese version.

As for the movie, I really liked it, except for the CG blood - too distracting and fake looking. It would have looked so much better just using traditional blood effects.

At first I was leery of the CG blood but damn if it didnt win me over. I cant recommend this movie enough, when the movie was over I had a huge grin on my face and the movie gave me one of the biggest laughs Ive had watching a movie in a long time.

www.cdwow.net I can't find that on the USA CDWow but you can choose $$s at the checkout. £8.99 UK price and US$16.

Uncut, DTS (the Japanese is not DTS), NTSC, English subtitles on the film, a few less extras than the Japanese disc but it doesn't matter as there are no subtitles.

Yeah, lots of good stuff on that site

For those interested in Zatoichi do not mess about thinking about it. Region 3 discs tend to last for a very short time on CDWow. When it's out of stock that's it gone.

It's number 1 in their sales chart. So go get it!

Price wise the Region 3 is also the best deal, at least it was for me. Anyone in NY can get it in Chinatown for $16

Finally got round to watching Zatoichi at the weekend with a couple of mates. After all the positive reviews etc. I must say I personally found it very disappointing. The visuals, CGI effects etc. were great but I found the film very slow, nor did I care much for the musical number. Having not seen any of the original movies I presume they are similar in terms of action and pace and therefore I was expecting too much from it. Also having recently watched a few of the Baby Cart series (which are excellent) - perhaps I was expecting the pace of Zatoichi to have been along the same lines.

An action samurai fest this is not...

If it were available to rent I would certainly recommend renting first before commiting your hard earned but the Hong Kong release is relatively inexpensive in any case.

Speaking of that whole MiramAxe rights and dvd-importing-for-personal-use thing... anyone hear of any update from that cease-and-desist brouhaha they slapped on some site advertising the import Hero DVD?

I thought the CGI swords looked really lame (especially the one in the first fight scene) but I enjoyed the story very much. Too bad the second disc isn't subbed. It looked like they gave a wealth of info on the making of the movie.

You can order from overseas all you want and no one can stop you. The only thing Miramax is legally able to prevent is American-based retailers from carrying the imported DVDs themselves. They have no jurisdiction to block foreign-based retailers from selling to whoever they want.

That being said, how does this affect rental operations (like, say, Nicheflix)?

I have been working my way through the orginal Zaotichi movies thanks to netflix, and I recommend them highly.

I would even recommend them over Zatoichi 2003 which I did not care for all that much. I did not care for the CG effects and even though Takeshi Kitano is very good, I prefer Shintarô Katsu.

Just last night I watched Zatoichi 4: The Fugitive and it was fantastic and it is the best I have seen so far. The picture quality is amazing so a big thumbs up to Home Vision Entertainment for making these available.

Which 2 or 3 of the old Zatoichi films are considered the best?

I agree that "The Fugitive" episode is great - saw this at last month's DC International Film Fest, I also had the chance to see "New Adventures of Zatoichi" on the big screen, that was also very good.

Does anyone know if the version on amazon.co.jp is still the two-disc R2? Or if there's anywhere cheaper to get it? (Preferably in the US, but I realize this is going to be a tall order).
