The thing I worry about is the ending to the remake film. I just can't see Hollywood keeping the same ending to this movie, but on the other hand, I can't imagine this film without that dark ending.

I thought Fincher also, but I don't want them to straight up copy the film in terms of style. I want a director at the helm who can take the material, and a brand new cast, and can shed something of a new, or different, light on everything.
I do NOT want a sceene by sceene remake. I think Brian DePalma could take it, and do wonders with everything, while still respecting the original work.
I for one think this project could work, but that's just me.

um...they've already assigned a director to the remake...like back in August.
Filmmaker Justin Lin, who wrote and directed the teen/crime/drama “Better Luck Tomorrow,” has been assigned to adapt the critically acclaimed South Korean film, “Oldboy,” which recently won Grand Prix (second place) at this year’s Cannes.
According to Variety, Lin and “Better Luck Tomorrow” writing partners Ernesto Foronda and Fabian Marquez will write the American film adaptation for Universal Pictures."

old boy: can anyone clarify something?
great flick...
can anyone clarify just one thing for me?
the "bad guy" (the brother of the girl) was the one that had our protagonist "imprisoned" for all those years, but what was his reason?
is it that our oh desau witnessed the brother raping his sister? or that the sister was indeed impregnated by the brother?
i was interrupted as a couple of moments in the film by phone calls and didn't go back and view them since it was late already...guess i can go back and do that now, but i'm just too lazy!
can anyone tell me the scoop on the motive of the bad guy?

Edited to add completely unnecessary spoiler tags to appease some posters...
The bad guy had Daesu imprisoned over it, so that he could exact revenge.

This thread needs some SPOILER warnings big time!
IIRC
That plot point (Oh Daesu talking to his friend) takes about 10 seconds of screen time, and it's pretty underplayed. Easy to miss if you're not paying close attention.
The movie does reward paying close attention, so you should go back and watch it again!
And IMDB put up the listing for the remake. Ugh.

That film made me happy and aroused in so many evil ways.. I felt shameful as I watched it, a similar feeling I gained after watching Lolita.. ooh "The Chair" scene!..
Daesu's grin at the end ? Has he accepted the good or the bad one, since he smiles after his
says "I love you"
I cant wait for my ultimate box set to come I want that brass in my hand, surely one of the greatest films I have seen in a long long time. So stylistic and wonderfully arousing both emotionally and sadistically those parts of our minds we never explore in reality.

ehonauer is mostly correct. If I recall correctly...
eXcentris - in Sight & Sound's article, they mention this, saying that while Woo-Jin's character seems to me much older than the actor playing him, everyone agreed that he was the best to play the role - not only because it was against type for him, but that it reflected the smarminess and lack of maturity Woo-Jin had reached.
