Gerbs, I never said the predictability is the film's only fault, now did I?

if i start trying to predict things in the movie, i know, for me, the movie is sucking...

i actually didn't like the ending, but overall, i really enjoyed the movie. i'd give it a 8/10. certainly not for everyone, but i went along for the ride.

I don't think it's much of a fault at all, honestly. STGP has an internal logic and that's enough for me.

STGP has many faults, but these are the chances a filmmaker takes in making a movie this eccentric and quirky. I'm not trying to convince anyone it is a flawless piece of filmmaking, my only contention is that it is a daring one.

That's not a twist, just a part of the story (which may or may not be fabricated) that the "alien" tells.

Any recommendations on which DVD to pick up? Or where would be cheapest? I keep meaning to check it out...

I was leaving it ambiguous for those who hadn't seen the film. Thanks for the spoiler.

Just because
Spoiler:
Kang really is an alien
doesn't mean
Spoiler:
that his story is completely without fabrication.
I thought it was pretty clear from the scenes of
Spoiler:
Kang reading through Lee's materials, together with the scenes taken directly from 2001: A Space Odyssey and the Old Testement that the story was embellished, and not to be taken completely at face value.

Woahhhhh! Now hold on a minute! About the ending and "predictability"...

Spoiler:

I don't believe that Kang was an alien at all. I see the whole ending of the movie as allegorical. When the main character's girlfriend dies and he's lying on the ground looking at her, I believe his last words are "but who is going to save the Green Planet now..." He's dying and everything you see after that IS ALL IN HIS HEAD. He's so convinced that Kang is an alien that he IMAGINES the spaceship arriving and all the rest. And when the credits start to roll and you see the images of his life on the tv floating in the air, that's the "your whole life flashes before your eyes" moment right before death.

that's not the only reason why i think it is true. here's my take on it:

Spoiler:
Lee was right about everything that he said. he even got the language right.

the idea that our popular culture is referenced doesn't mean that the truth was embellished. rather, i think that the movie, books, evolution, the bible, etc. are all pale reflections of what had really happened. they aren't totally true but, but the truth is out there.

you could say that Lee put together the truth from all the clues... but, i wouldn't necessarily be happy w/ that.

it didn't hit me until i realized that telepathy clearly exists. the helmets work, the haircut worked, Lee's girlfriend had it (from her sudden realization that Lee was in danger). i think Lee probably had some of it as well and that helped him understand what was really happening. he was drawn to it.

but, ultimately, the realization that Kang is an alien was the final piece evidence. at that moment, i had to say... Lee wasn't a nutcase. i had been still thinking, no way... he can't be right.

what is the true message about the film? the reason i gave this movie an 8/10 was b/c it is the only movie (maybe the matrix) that i can think of that asks you to make a decision in the end.

do you still doubt Lee? despite his suffering life and after everything was confirmed, do you still doubt as everyone else in the movie did? do you lack the faith? if you doubt, then you have failed the experiment... and we deserve the final resolution.

i choose to believe him.

note that this is just a movie and that my little commentary is purely a mental exercise.

whatever. it is obvious that it is a matter of debate and interpretation. my take (until excentris threw me off...) was that it was true.

Great theory eXcentris! Thanks for highlighting yet another possibility, and a very persuasive one at that.

Spoiler:
Ichi the Killer had an ending with a similar explanation, where some people posed it was all in Kakihara's mind.
