Bruno Dumont's "Twentynine Palms"

Recently some forum members have expressed their displeasure regarding french dvd's not having english subs, well then there is good news:

Bruno Dumont's latest film "Twentynine Palms" is set to release on April 29 by french studio Blaq out and the film along with the extras will be subtitled. Dumont has previously directed La Vie de Jesus" and the award winning "l' Humanite."

There's a review of the DVD @ DVD Beaver.

This is great news, though this is really a film that SCREAMS to be seen theatrically. It screened recently in NYC as part of the Rendez-Vous with French Cinema festival. It is a near-masterpiece, but not for everyone.

I wrote more about it here.

The Rendez-Vous truly is one of the few options for people to see films that are not likely to show in the US. For the record this was the only place that offered Adjani's Adolphe with English subs.....of course the French dvd does not offer such....and an R1 release is not going to happen either...

Of course....I am looking forwar to this production......

Thank's for the info....

It's nice to know that atleast few people ARE interested. Here is some more info on Twentynine Palms:

It's World Premiere was in Venice last year in the "Official Competition." It first opened in North America at the Toronto Film Festival, also last year. As BabyBuddha mentioned above Twentynine Palms was part of Rendez-Vous with French Cinema earlier this month but actually the film was to be released in NY/LA on March 12 by Wellspring but they probably waited to get a reaction at the festival first. Now it is set to release on april 9th.

Pro-b, you're right about "Adolphe" but if my memory is correct, i could ALMOST swear that i have read a dvd review of it in english somewhere with subs but haven't found it since so may be i am thinking of another adjani's film.

lol, nice offer, but believe me i am as crazy about adjani and her films as you are and having seen "adolphe" (w/out subs, offcourse) i would love to find it. I may be hijacking by own thread here but have you seen "bonvoyage".

Now, i'm going to post an image for the first time since i became a member, of Twenty nine Palms, hopefully i won't screw it up.

I went through this...but it is coming to cinemas so an Engish version will be available in R1...of course not as massive as this one

I am actually going to get both Adolphe and La Repentie with my next French offer...these are not coming here...that's for sure....

Bjackson has both of them...my brother only has Adolphe...paid with my money.

What about the costumes and decors in Adolphe....stunning....love period films!!

On a side note Yekaterina Golubeva is also in Pola X (L. Carax's film...you know...Lovers on the Bridge)...gorgeous.....
The R1 version of Pola X is also good but the French cover is TOP NOTCH-

Cheers,
Pro-B

Personally, I thought Pola-X was a load of pretentious rubbish.

Good news re: Twentynine Palms -- Dumont does have a distributor in the US, so it will definitely be getting a theatrical release! Woo-hoo!

...oh, good! America's preeminent movie critic liked it, so it's got to be bad!... (...the movie was panned in France...)

That's true, but the film from which i remember her the most from and it is also one of my favorite french films of the last decade is Claire Denis' "I Can't Sleep".

On Pola X: Although i don't think it was Carax's best (i just thought he was the wrong director to go into Melville's material) the film still has sequences which will remain with me and Roger Ebert also pointed them out even though he isn't in love with the film either.

Pro-bassoonist -- not to hijack the thread, but I have to ask -- what was it about Pola-X you liked? I've watched it several times and have not been able to get more out of it other than -- "oh, so that's what it's like when rich beautiful French people copulate". (My intended word was censored!)

The music in the film, however, is great.

Here's my answer to you....

In principal I like all of Carax's films as Lovers on the Bridge being on the top of my list. I also own Boy meets Girl (though I like the French dvd cover with the original poster art better)...

Anyhow....let me be very specific- I like films that deal with issues of psychological detriment...with some artistic flavor in it. I could easily see why you thought that this film was a "pretentious rubbish". All of Carax's films are difficult to view....slow...even Boy Meets Girl with the young Binoche would probably be pretty artsy for you...I suppose.

What I liked a lot was the young Depardieu and his tormented look. This combined with the episodic progression of the film and the cold "industrial" feel of it. This is a quality you could see in the early 80's German cinema...not French films. Very unusual.

As to the Melville's reference....I dont think that Carax has claimed this film to be the "ultimate" adaptation of the Melville's work. Rather, a source of inspiration. This is a difficult work (would you claim that Cronenberg was 100% truthful to Naked Lunch)....

Aynow.Hope this makes sense to you....

My taste in film is often very polarized-I like extreme films that some might tag "incomprehensible" or perhaps even confusing....yet I love a tender love story as well (not the sugary type...).

To sum it all up....though I never refer to Ebert to back my claims I believe that he was right on the spot when he said that he would rather see one Carax film than 100 "Bring it On"s.....

Cheers mate ,
Pro-B

Since my thread has already been "hijacked", thanks in part to me for bringing up BON VOYAGE , and since now we've moved on to talking about films that deal with issues of "psychological detriment....with artistic flavor" as pro -b put it, who not talk about Brono Dumont's "l' Humanite!! I'd like to hear what you guys thought of it?
