Kill Bill foreign editions

I've seen passing references on this forum to the effect that the US release of Tarantino's KILL BILL will be edited for excessive violence, while an unedited version will be available in areas other than Region 1. Does anyone have any details on this? If so, I definitely want to get the foreign edition. Thanks in advance, and apologies if this duplicates something already discussed that I somehow missed in my searching. Best, Scott

Welcome to the forum Scott!!

If such a version was indeed shown for example in Europe you could count on the fact that the Dutch WILL HAVE it. Norway and Finlad also tend to be very liberal when it comes to film product.

France...yes., perhaps (but I would assume that there will be non-removable subs).

As of now though I personaly am not aware of any specific details. Perhaps such will be arriving soon.

Again, nice to have you here!

Cheers,
Pro-B

I dont think the US version will be edited, what Tarantino has gone on record as saying is that he cut different versions for different countries, what you saw in theatres in the US will be on the US DVD. What I do want to get is the Japanese cut if only for the fact that the House of Blue Leaves fight has no switch to black and white like the US had.

If there is a R3 edition of it, which I'm sure there will be, I wouldn't be shocked if it contained the Japanese cut of the film.

The Japanese R2 disc should definitely have the more violent cut of the film (as shown theatrically in Japan, and in my humble opinion was far superior to the US version), but may or may not have English subs for the Japanese language sequences. I believe that this same version was shown theatrically in Hong Kong, so the HK R3 DVD should also have the same cut of the film and is much more likely to have English subs covering the Japanese dialogue. I'm not sure which of the two versions were theatrically shown in various parts of Europe though.

Has anybody found Kill Bill region 3 for pre-sale anywhere? From what I've read it's still supposed to come out the end of February.

Scott,

What pro-bassoonist said. Welcome to the forum.

However, in the future, when asking a question please put a "?" at the end of the thread title. Die-hard DVD geeks like myself will click on the link expecting to glean some new information and be sorely disappointed when there isn't any....and we'll hold it against you forever and ever...

Cultshock, besides not going to black and white, what makes you say the Japanese cut was far superior to the US version? Some examples please.

Maybe saying "far superior" is a bit of hyperbole on my part, but I prefer it because the fight scene choreography is clearer in colour, and
Spoiler:
the Bride hacking off Sophie's other arm is a nice sadistic little touch.

Cool cult, nice to know something more other than the color switch is added , although its the main reason I want the japanese version.

Not sure how true it is but i've heard rumour on another forum that there will be a standard Japanese version and also a LE of 3000 sets featuring a T-shirt and a collectible Kubrick type figure.
Both versions fully uncut.

Its not the matter of it being uncut, just a different cut.

But is it as likely internationally (as it clearly will be in the US) that following the release of vol 2 that a "super" box set will be released (with possibly more bonus stuff)?

The presence of a commentary track alone, tarantino's first, would warrant a purchase, but I wouldn't hold my breath on that one. There was a pseudo-commentary track on Reservoir Dogs, but i'd really enjoy listening to him ramble on for an hour and a half, barely taking a breath, talking about these movies.

That would be cool. Maybe it would be the same Kubrick Be@rbrick figure that was available in Japan with the purchase of the advance theatre ticket. I want one of those but don't want to pay 40 bucks for one on ebay.

Tarantino did a commentary for True Romance.

He also did a commentary for From Dusk til Dawn (with Robert Rodriguez) and Switchblade Sisters (with Jack Hill). But that's it so far, and he hasn't done one for any of his own films yet, unfortunately.

I know, that is why it's so puzzling. QT loves giving interviews, yet he's averse to doing commentaries. I suppose he might view them as being unnecessary or even "demystifying". In any case, can't wait for the box!

I can imagine that to do a truly satisfying commentary on Kill Bill, the film would have to be slowed down to a crawl so Tarantino would have time to explain all the references and his sources of inspiration.

Well, they're taking orders for it on this website: http://www.dvdslimited.com, so it's more official than just a rumor.

Not to mention, they announce it right on their front page - just scroll down.

I wouldn't order it. I haven't read about it on any websites I know to be legitimate. I would think that thedigitalbits or dvddebate or some other site would be all over this. dvddebate got wind of the good, the bad and the ugly se and it is being released in MAY. Why has this yet to be reported there? Besides, dvdlimited.com has to be the most dodgy looking site i've seen. Perhaps they are legit, but i'd rather wait, get the double box and avoid any potential rip-offs. Postcards or an allegedly low print run don't exactly give me chills, either.

Why would The Digital Bits (a R1 exclusive site) or DVD Debate (a US R1, UK R2, and R4 site) report about a Japanese R2 DVD?

The Japanese R2 DVD is legit, and just like a lot of Japanese DVDs (Hero, Alien Quadrilogy, Battle Royale II...), they're including a bunch of goodies with the DVD.

In some countries, believe it or not, DVDs aren't announced until a month or two before it's released. Hell, in Hong Kong, DVDs aren't usually announced until a few weeks before it's released (hell, nobody knew about the Battle Royale II R3 DVD until the week prior to release).

Those were only examples of websites I frequent for info. Perhaps I wrongly assumed that I am fairly well informed when it comes to these sorts of things. However, they are not the only places I get news. I check around at least every couple of days for news on foreign releases. It's true what you say about BR2, and that is a reason to be suspicious. However, dvdsoon.com often gets information early and they aren't the pillar of legitimacy. All we can do is wait and see...
