Looking for Korean DVD suggestions.

I am probably going to be placing an order for the Dogville and Avalon 2 disc sets from Korea. I was wondering if anyone had some suggestions for dvds available from Korea.

Here is a link to my movies:

what exactly are you interested in? Korean films or DVD titles available in Korea (and not in the US)?

I just picked up Tale of Two Sisters when I ordered my copy of Dogville SE. I have to say it is an interesting film. I wouldn't say it is a horror movie (though it utilizes some of those elements) like it tries to pass itself off as, it is more of a thriller. Odd movie, but good IMO.

You may or may not be interested in a japanese movie, but the Korean release of All About Lily Chou-Chou is a good release. It is a great movie, one of my "recent" favorites I recommend it.

Of course there is also Attack the Gas Station. That is a fun little movie.

Those are 3 different types of movies, you would probably enjoy atleast one of them depending on your taste, check them out.

I just posted 3 or 4 titles in the " DEFINITIVE List of DVDs EXCLUSIVELY available OUTSIDE the US - Part III " thread:

- The Longest Day (R3 Korea) - anamorphic

- Remo Williams (R3 Korea) - anamorphic

- The American President (R3 Korea) - anamorphic

- Back to the Future (R3 Korea) - available "loose" (not in the boxed set - for those who, like me, think II and III are dreck)

- All the Bond films that are currently in US moratorium - and all priced at 9900 Won to boot (about US $9)

Okay, I live in Korea right now so here some of the better DVDs I've seen here.

Memories of Murder: LE (try to get the LE because it's a great set, if not the SE has some nice extras) - region 3
Battle Royale: Director's Cut (same as the Tartan but no subtitle, all region and NTSC)
Wonderful Days (nice movie with a nice 2-disk set) - region 3
Friend: UE (you can still find the metal box if you come to Korea, but all the American website say it's sold out) - all region
Dances with Wolves 4-disk LE (theatrical cut, director's cut (with DTS) and a disk of extras, comes in a really nice case) - all region
Spirited Away Limited Bonus Edition (the 2-disk set with a pack of cards, film frames and a very nice (and big) art book, getting very hard to find here so buy it quickly) - region 3
Francois Ozon Box Set (if you're into this guy, you have 5 of his movies and 5 of his shorts) - region 3 (I think)
Predator 2-disk SE (very nice set with DTS track!) - region 3
A Tale of Two Sister (I concur with this one, definitely one of the creepiest movies around) - region 3
Hulk LE (3 disks, just like the Australian release, includes a DTS track) - region 3 (disks 2 and 3 are all region)
Whispering Corridors 3: Whispering Stairs (the third part of the series has a 2-disk set) - region 2
Citizen Kane Collector's Set (the 2 disk Se from the US plus RKO 381) - all region, I think
Blood The Last Vampire (very nice and very huge box set containing 3 disks of the anime movie) - region 3
Cowboy Bebop (all the series in 9 disks in a lunch box, and then...)
Cowboy Bebop The Movie (same as the US release but comes with a nice little book) - region 3
The Pianist UE (3-disk set, LE, very, very hard to find but maybe you can be lucky, same as the Canadian LE but with a better case) - region 3
Dogville LE (get the LE because it's awesome)
James Bond Collection (you can either buy the movies seperately for 9900 won a pop or buy the entire 21-disk box set for 140000 won or so, has all the Bond movies (except Never Say Never Again)) - region 3
Terminator 3 LE (3 disks, comes with an action figure, Arny or T-X ( your choice), both widescreen and full screen versions, and an incredible DTS track)

That's all I can suggest for now. Hope it helped.

Okay, sorry, just noticed a mistake. Battle Royale has English subtitles in the movie but nowhere else. The Cowboy Bebop series is region 3. Dogville is region 3 and so is T3. Sorry about that.

One last thing: the Avalon 2-disker has 3 hours of extras on disk 2 but no English subitles on them.

One more thing, is it worth spending the extra money on the Tale of Two Sisters 2 Disc set? Or are their no english subtitles/dub on the extras also?

THere are NO english subs on the extras disc. The extra scenes are pretty helpful though in figuring out the movie even without the subs.

The packaging of the 2-disc is nice and you get a frame of the negative with it as well. You may or may not care about that.

It's very, very rare for any non-English language DVD to have English subs on anything other than the movie. None of the Korean or Japanese movies I mentioned hav any subs on the extras. In fact, I don't know of any 2-disk sets in Korea or Hong Kong that have English subs everywhere. (That's really a shame. they sub the movie, they could take a few more hours to sub the extras, right?) However, I've noticed that many DVDs favour behind the scenes footage. So any featurette or documentary will be that kind of stuff. Interviews and things of that nature are lost unless you speak the language.

A Tale of Two Sisters is great and should be seen by everyone. If you have a 5.1 system, it's you duty to buy the 2-disk Korean set, as it has one of the best DTS-ES tracks I've ever heard. I haven't heard the HK release, but the packaging is better for the Korean release. In any case, I've found that even if you don't understand the language, most of the times the extras are still really interesting. I'd recommend the Korean set.

As far as I know, the Korean edition of Avalon is only 2 disk set around for that movie. HKL did a few Korean flicks so maybe they might pick up a Japanese flick eventually.

Does anyone know if the Francois Ozon boxset has any fogging or visual censoring in any of the movies?

I have the box set and I doubt it. I didn't see much of the stuff on it but I didn't see any kind of censoring. I can check if you really want me to but my next message will probably be the same as this one.

If it isn't too much trouble, could you check? I'm pretty interested in the set, but can't find any reviews for it.

Okay, I'll look at it, but I don't have time now. I leave on vacation and I'm coming back at the end of the month, so I'll look at them then.

korean Francois Ozon boxset has visual censoring in some of the movies. In the box, there is even a certificate which warrants the publisher of the DVD will exchange the disks for uncensored version if the uncensored version can be released sometime in the future.

Twin Peaks. Fire Walk With Me is two disk set where disk 2 is The Art Of David Lynch documentary. Also very nice packaging indeed.

Thanks for the info, nello. Looks like I'll be going with the individual (and more expensive ) R1 or R2 releases.
