i got the philips 727 for it's all region ability, and replaced my panasonic rp62 with it, but I'm now noticing excessive staircasing in a lot of dvds.
The display is a 27" sony, non progressive set, input is s-video.
In X2, right in the main menu, the lines of the 3D interface aren't smooth. in LOTR: TTT, the top edges of mountains show staircasing as well.
I'm planning on returning the RP62 into service as my region 1 player and only using the philips as the all region unit.

It's probably the case of the Philips having poorer in player letterboxing for 4:3 displays (in the case of 16:9 enhanced titles that is). Do you notice the same problem with non-anamorphic dvds? This is one of those things that varies tremendously between players, and unfortunately most players are piss poor at it.

ah yes. I'm still trying to justify buying a HD sony that will do 16:9 compression which would likely make the philips work as my single player as I don't have any issues with it otherwise.

no, it's just a 2 year old non wega.
I've just realized how much cheaper it is to buy a sony HD set from the US (I live near the border).
$1700CAD from crutchfield compared to $2200 locally.

I was all ready to take the plunge and get the Phillips DVD727 to replace my ancient Apex 600A, but I was scared off initially by the reader reviews on Amazon. A lot of people are saying the life of this unit is rather short, with many people complaining it stops working under 90 days.
Anyone here have that problem?
Jeremy

Hello everyone, I just bought the Philips 727 and have a problem I'm hoping someone can help me with. I have the player hooked up to a Denon 1802 receiver via optical cable. It works great, except I can't get any sound from VCD's or SVCD's. I tried hooking it up via digi coax and I have the same problem. However, when I have it hooked up via RCA it works fine. I called tech support and they were no help so I thought someone here could tell me if I'm missing a setting or if my player is broken. Thanks in advance. . .

I've got an Apec 600a and have had it since it came out. The Philips looks SO much better. I can't even watch dvds on the Apex anymore its so bad compared to the Philips.
Chrismg, the do VCDs use MPEG audio? Maybe your receiver doesn't support that and the philips doesn't convert it to PCM. Try the analog outputs.

no problems playing VCDs/SVCDs on my 727; i'm using coax digital out. if you're sure the config is good, then try exchanging it. are your VCDs home-made?

Haven't heard anyone touch on this issue yet: Does the Phillips 727 support DTS audio? I saw one at Target and didn't see a DTS logo anywhere on the machine or on the box. Doesn't it have to have "DTS out" in order to play a DTS track (and I don't mean a DTS decoder, because we all know that a good receiver has a decoder)?
