Hindi / Indian dvd's: any anamorphic?

any hindi / indian movie fans out there?

if so, does anyone know if there is a list of 16:9 anamorphic widescreen titles? i'm pretty sure that most of recent releases are widescreen, but not too sure if any at all are truly anamorphic...Monsoon Wedding is case in point, the back of the cover says anamorphic widescreen, when in reality is surely IS NOT anamorphic...

any ideas?

Hi slateef,
Welcome to the world of Hindi DVDs. I must warn you beforehand that quality is at a premium in case of hindi dvds. But there are select few titles which are anamorphic widescreen dvds.
Goto http://www.zulm.net/modules.php?op=m...stories_topics[0]=31

and you will find most of your answers. Also this web site is a good resource of Indian DVDs related questions.

Be careful as even some of the anamorphic titles like Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge do not have good image quality.

If your player has X, Y. scaling you can make a 2.35:1 LBX a anamorphic, my mod JVC player does it on region 2 or 4 which are PAL. I don't what region your hindi are if they are PAL, that same JVS mod player would scale it for you to view as anamorphic. I hope this helps

Glad to see TCM doing this as this is one area of film I know very little about. I got in late on 'Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge' this past Thursday but I liked what I saw. Have been trying to run down the DVD on this. I see some listed on Ebay with this movie and another on the same DVD. Anyone have any info on the quality of these discs or even if they are legit? At www.ezbollywood.com I found the DVD with just the movie and a bonus cd with music from the film. Any input from the board on this one would be great too.

The majority of the Hindi DVDs out there are anamorphic. However, you will find the quality varies from disc to disc. You will get a great transfer one time, the next disc is awful without even time encoding. But, the good thing is, they are very cheap. At places like www.Indiaweekly.com and www.Nehaflix.com (the two best Indian movie retailers) you can get hundreds of discs in the $5 range. New movies go for $18, but drop in price after a few months.

Zulm.net is a great resource. They even post up screenshots of a lot of discs.

BTW, about TCM showing the Bollywood films, be sure to check out this Thursday June 12 at 8 EST for my favorite Bollywood film RANGEELA. A must see if you like the genre. Or, you can but the DVD for $6.

DO NOT Get the official release of "Dil to Pagal Hai". Although the sound is very good, the picture quality is the worst I've ever seen in a Hindi DVD, pirated or otherwise! In fact, friend has the pirated version and its a better transfer.

Af for Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, I agree with Indycohiba, its a pretty bad transfer.

http://www.indiaplaza.com is also another good source of official release (no pirated version) hindi DVDs. They offer free shipping and the prices are comparable to Nehaflix, etc.

Also don't forget to check out my all time favorite Hindi movie, SHOLAY, it is truely a classic IMHO. I have even sent requests to Criterion for them to release this movie to do it justice it deserves. Its a shame they are showing it at 2:00 am.

Both are I think $3.99 Priority with 99 cents each additional disc. Standard shipping is less. They are VERY quick shippers. With Nehaflix, I got a bunch of discs the day after ordering them.

India Weekly also price matches and discounts if you find the title cheaper anywhere else.

FYI...Nehaflix has free shipping for orders of $25 or more and with use of the code "CHALTE". This is good until 6/30/03 I believe.

They had the lowest price on Mujhse Dosti Karoge for $18....and it was in stock this time!

Anyone know the specs for the horror film Bhoot? Is Darna Mana Hai available on DVD? Also, any other suggestions for Hindi/Indian horror flicks?

Thanks for this thread!

BHOOT is anamorphic I believe, and a great film. Haven't picked up the DVD yet but saw it in theatres.

RAAT by the same director is a horror film and available for under $10.
