Correct me if I'm wrong, but it sounds like this DVD doesn't have any PAL speedup. The Fox fanfare plays at normal speed at the beginning and none of the actors sound high-pitched. Was it transfered from video, cuz that's usually the reason for a lack of speedup on a PAL disc(Coupling Season 2 was like this).

28 DAYS LATER IS GREAT!

I just wanted to let you know that 28 DAYS LATER is an absolute masterpiece. Got my R2 copy in the mail today, and quickly assembled a large bunch of people to watch the movie.

We got terrified.

Together.

One of the year's best films (resting alongside ALL THE REAL GIRLS), easily.

Can't wait to watch it again!

D.

Since the movie was shot on PAL video (as was a show like Coupling), the audio plays back at the speed it was recorded at. No speedup.

I will also note that in many cases where a film is sped up for PAL, the studio will correct the pitch in the transfer. It will still be sped up, but at the normal pitch, which makes it less noticeable.

Considering the PAL video source, how does this look on a Malata? I know there's some shimmering or combing with PAL video material that the filters can't get rid of unless you're viewing the film in progressive mode.

It looked fine on my JVC (same chipset). I'd know if it was in video mode since its so bad its obvious.

I read in another thread that the transfer was from a 35mm source. If so then so much for no PAL speedup. After listening to the commentary I believe it did come from a film source as not just DV was used in the film. One sequence was shot on Super8 and the end was shot on 35mm.

I watched it on my Malata player this evening and didn't see any shimmering or combing during the film. It did turn up a bit during the deleted scenes and alternate ending, but those didn't look very good to begin with, so no loss there.

Good... Should be okay since it's from the film source.

I HATE when I get a PAL dvd and my Malata (n996) can' t get rid of the shimmer with my Interlaced Sony Wega.

Mine came in the mail today.

What a good film. Nay, a great film.

Not much zombie action, so sorry if that's what you were looking for. But it's still very unsettling and compelling, more of a survival-post-apocalypse film.

I'm yet another person who got around to watching it last night. Great movie, and a great DVD. If you're on the fence about this one get it. You know if you don't get the DVD some lame a$$ friend is going to talk you into seeing it with him, it's going to cost $9 for the ticket, and another $10 for some popcorn and a soda just so you can sit in a smelly theater while some kid cries the whole time. For the same price you can watch it at home in the comfort of your living room and be the first on your block to see it, what a bargain!

It's actually a good movie, a solid 1st cousin to Day and Dawn of the Dead in that there are very many (i'll be nice) 'homages' from the very beginning to the end. At many points the soundtrack seems heavily inspired by Dawn as well, making it sound just like an update (most notably the grocery store scene.) Which isn't to say this movie is too derivative, there's enough style and originality there to make this movie stand on its' own. While watching this movie it was hard not to think about the Mad Cow problem in the UK a couple of years ago, and wonder how influential it was to the makers.

I was impressed with theuse DD 5.1 soundtrack. They really move the sound around through all the speakers on this one, and at times it really helps build the sense of urgency or anxiety depending on the scene. Vocals could be a little low on the center channel at times, but over all dialog was crisp and easily understood.

The video quality of the DVD has taken some hits, both here and in other reviews. I watched this movie on a Toshiba 3900 connected to a Sony Wega via component cables. After viewing the DVD I have to believe that the DVD mirrors the director's intent more than a studio foul up of the transfer. It has a very dreamlike quality to it, which somewhat mirrors the main character's situation in the film. I don't think the PQ was bad at all, just not natural, and I think that may throw some people off.

Overall a in my book.

I have the exact same setup, and the only movie that's done that to me so far is The Italian Job PAL R2 SE.

I'd say it was quite apparent in their minds. Watch the so-called making-of in which they and scientists rattle on for a bit too long about the possibility of a sudden plague.

Yeah, I've only had a few french DVD's and a few R2 UK dvd's do this... Glad it's not a frequent thing.

I also thought the picture quality was pretty damn good on the 28 Days Later dvd... Looked like there were some compression problems, but other than that I thought it was fine.

Well, I got it today and watched it. The video quality wasn't that bad. However, the film was kinda crappy. It wasn't completely crappy - I mean, it was about as good as Dog Soldiers which isn't saying much. The extras were kinda useless (although I didn't check out the feature commentary or the making of which I'm sure are cool) as far as the deleted scenes and alternate ending. Overall, the film was just kinda boring. It wasn't scary or fun or sad or anything. It wasn't up to par with the director's previous works. I'd suggest passing on this one and just wait till it hits US theaters or catch it on cable or a rental. But then I doubt anyone will be swayed by my opinion.

Good movie -- enjoyed it very much. If you don't have unrealistic expectations it's well worth it.

Just watched this movie over the weekend. It's a really solid zombie film. I'm a huge horror/zombie movie fan and I thought this was a good addition to the genre. I didn't think it was ever boring but the climax is a little predictable. I'm sure everyone of us who loves this movie will tell someone and then their expectations will be high and then we will start to hear how this is not that good of a horror movie.

I noticed on the preview for Resident Evil that the voices were definitely sped up but I had no problem watching 28 Days Later.

Overall, I'm very happy with that I purchased this title and will watch again.

Also loved it as well... The End was a little shakey, but overall enjoyed it a lot.

I watched 28 Days later a few weeks ago. Brilliant film and I can totally recommend it. If anyone is interested here is my review of the R2 DVD which is also pretty cool:
