Upcoming Jodorowsky Box from Japan!

Does anyone have any details on this, such as audio/subs? I'm sick of waiting for the UK R2 of Santa Sangre... and I miss the English soundtracks from my old El Topo & Holy Mountain laserdiscs...

click here for the HMV Japan link

Most likely doesnt have english subs. CDJapan is normally good at listing them if they will be on there. They only show Japanese subs.

The boxset will include 5 DVDs...Fando and Lis, El Topo, Holy Mountain, and Santa Sangre. The 5th disc is all interviews with Alexandro Jodorowsky. The boxset is a limited edition, only 2003 sets will be sold. I've looked at HMV, CD Japan, and Amazon.co.jp, but none of them mentioned about an English subtitle...the DVD contents doesn't seem to be finalized yet, but I doubt there will be one.

Also, El Topo, Holy Mountain, and Santa Sangre will also be released separately, but not Fando and Lis, strange...

so, is flesh censoring a thing of the past or will "El Topo" be optically fogged? I couldn't imagine an expensive box set getting released as such.

If the extra disc contains the same stuff as the bonus documentary on the R1 Fando & Lis disc, I might wind up just picking up Santa Sangre and then waiting for reviews of the rest...

Japanese laws have relaxed, in regards to frontal nudity and most foreign films recently released in Japan tend not to have any optical censoring. So, as long as new prints are used for the Jodorowsky DVDs, we might be OK.

If I hear good things about this set, I'm getting it. Yay, maybe I can finally get rid of my Japanese prerecords of El Topo and Holy Mountain.

Japan rules are relaxed to a bit more only. You still get censored private part. The only film I recall where they bared it all and was not censored was Shindlers List.
Frontal Nudity for women is okay if it does not expose more that the hair part. For men it's all digitally fogged.

Maybe it depends on the distributor? I've seen one or two films in Japan theatres in the past couple years (French films that I can't remember the titles of, off the top of my head) that had glimpses of male nudity. Such censoring isn't technically a Japanese "law" anyway, so I think EIRIN (Japanese film board) can be persuaded to allow genitalia to be seen in certain rare cases and still give the films their stamp of approval.
But anyway, this topic could be a whole other interesting thread on its own.

Yes you are true, they sometimes forget to censor it or it goes unnoticed, like the Al Pacino movie Any Given Sunday where Cameron Diaz enters the shower room and there is a 1 guy who is completely naked! And they did not notice it at all.

By the way I cannot find the DVD's at the local stores. But will keep on tryin g but the box set is only coming up around July.

Got this in my inbox just now from CDJapan:

Alejandro Jodorowsky - DVD Boxed Set
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Psychedelic, surrealistic, zen-like western fable, "El Topo" catapulted
Jodorowsky's status from obscurity to international cult favourite.
It impressed John Lennon so much that he had a sizable hand in the film's worldwide distribution, and even helped finance Jodorowsky's next movie,

"The Holy Mountain" which is also a menagerie of surreal phantasmagoria, freckled with plenty of black comedy.

1989's "Santa Sangre" weaves a much more coherent narrative, while offering just as wild and surreal a cinematic trip as these films.

The new Jodorowsky boxed set also includes his 1967 oeuvre, "Fando y Lis (Fando and Lis)," which is about the title duo's surreal quest to find the mystical city of Tar.

Also included in the set are an extra disc containing a recent interview with Jodorowsky, and a bonus set of tarot cards designed by the filmmaker himself. "El Topo," "The Holy Mountain," and "Santa Sangre" are also available
separately.

To learn more about Alejandro Jodorowsky films on DVD, please
visit the following page at CDJapan:
http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/movie/speci...sky/index.html

To me this set is almost worth it for the Tarot cards alone....damnit, I have to really think about this now.

Its true that the Japanese discs apparently don't have English subs but they do have English audio tracks.

Hmm... Yeah, but I can't justify the price. Especially since I already have 3 of the 4 films on dvd.

So any firm news as yet with regard to the prints being used and the whole censorship issue?

I suspect by the time you get to find out for sure (ie..when it's released) those 2003 sets will have been snapped up!

Just got word that mine got sent today from www.ld-dvd.co.jp

They told me that Sangre, Topo, and Holy are all in English
Fando no subs, and no subs on the bonus disc
but these are aparently totally redone prints not the same as the
LD's from Nikkatsu and Amuse Japan

They were sent via express Japan post so it's guess it's now a race to see who posts the real skinny first. Should have it by week's end

Like other Japan releases as of late they have lightened up on the fogging issue until one of us spins these suckers it's going to be any one's guess
