Stephen Frears' The Hit
Does anyone know of an OAR version of The Hit anywhere? Artisan chose only to release a fullscreen DVD (as they are doing more and more often) in the US, and none of the UK and HK vendor sites I've check have any listing of the movie at all.

...erm... the OAR of that movie was 1.85:1 (in the USA) and - to the best of my recollection - 1.66:1 (in the UK, where I saw it waaay back in 1984 - incidentally, that was also the AR when the movie was shown recently on local TV)... in any case this film never was 2.35:1...!...

The French 2 disc (2nd disc is My Beautiful Laudrette) release has a beautiful anamorphic transfer (it's 'widescreen' and the AR is fine -possibly a tiny bit of cropping top/bottom).
Both DVDs have locked Franch subtitles on the English track but that's not a problem for my DVD players. You can check here to see if your player can remove them.
The transfer for My Beautiful Laundrette is nothing special and I gave mine away and kept my UK version. The extras that I watched on the disc are over spoken with French -so they're worse than useless.
If you like British thrillers you may well like this film. One of my favourites.
BTW, does anyone have the Region 1 The Hit disc? I'd like a copy of that artwork if you could do me a scan (front cover only) and upload it somewhere (no email sorry). Would be much obliged

Ah, I thought I had read that it was in 2.35:1, but apparently that was incorrect. Thanks for setting me straight!
Lucas: I *had* the R1 disc but got rid of it. Sorry.
I've been looking into getting a new player sometime soon, one that can properly convert the PAL signal, but it doesn't look like I'd be able to turn off forced subs since it'd be a cheaper player (can't justify a more expensive one). Hmph. I'll have to pass on that French disc.
