...actually, it's a 1979 movie - but that's neither here nor there... couldn't find a R1 DVD - perhaps there is a Japanese one?...

... it came out in the wake of the success generated by Lurhman's (kind of) similarly themed Strictly Ballroom. And no, there is no Japanese DVD available (in fact no DVD anywhere on the planet)... only a Hong Kong VCD release.

Wow! 1979 had me wondering exaclty how long I've been here since I saw it in the theaters. Was pretty sure I didn't come here when I was 10, but then it's early in the morning and I just woke up.

I noticed quite a lot of scenes were cut out or shortened for the Miramax release, when I saw the original Japanese version on TV recently. Hopefully R1 will be uncensored when released.

Well, I wouldn't mind 136 minutes but perhaps Miramax, the US studio which distributed the film in the US, felt a two-hour running time would be better for American audiences.
Anyway, does anyone know if the UK version is the only one coming out soon?

Korean (Region 3) 2-Disc Set is set to be released in early July.

According to DvdAsian & YesAsia, it's the 136 minute cut, which is the uncut Japanese version (right?). Japanes Audio, English subs. Barring poor technical specs, looks like we'll finally have a decent version of this great film on dvd (that's affordable).

theres the HK disc which is out : cd-wow have it reasonably cheap (include free shipping, look for a money off coupon to save more). it has english subs and although the back of the box says its the "international version" it is infact the full 136 minute movie. the subs are slightly faulty and not perfect, so if you love the film and want the bext edition i would guess the japanese would be the one. dont know how good the kroean will be, but the artworks nice...!

Out in Japan
On a trip to Japan two weeks ago, I saw Shall We Dance on DVD. Using my limited Japanese, I gathered that it was a 1) very recent release, and 2) a first-time domestic (for Japan) DVD release (or re-release). Didn't buy it because I couldn't be sure whether it had English subtitles.

But the extras only have Korean subs, too bad for those not fluent in either Korean or Japanese.
