Kurosawa DVD rights
I certainly hope that Criterion doesn't have the DVD rights to the majority of his films since their releases are so infrequent. The last Kurosawa DVD we got from them was "Red Beard", which was almost a year ago. Their next release (D'odes-ka'den) has been delayed for what seems like an eternity, and there isn't even a release date for it. So can we look forward to seeing some of Kurosawa's other movies on DVD from other companies anytime soon?

A footnote to Kurosawa fans: new subtitled prints of several films of his are making the US revival film circuit shortly. The AFI here in Washington DC began it's retrospective with last Friday's rerelease of "Ikiru". Select Landmark theatres and Dallas' Magnolia theatre are the only theatres that I know of that will showcasing these films as well.

As for hiy other movies: there's quite a lot of them out in Hong Kong from Mei Ah, but from what I hear they suffer from terrible subtitles.

BTW I e-mailed John Mulvany at Criterion and he told me that there are two or three Kurosawa DVDs planned for 2003, but that Dodes-Kaden might not be one of them.
