Anyone have the R3 Korean Ghost In The Shell?

Originally posted in DVD Reviews:

I saw the two-disc R3 Korean Ghost In The Shell on HKFlix.com, and was wondering if anyone has it and could post their thoughts. My questions: one, is the transfer better than the R1 Manga release? Two, are there English subtitles for the extras?

I work in the Korean district of NYC, so this DVD is proabably five minutes from me buying it. I just wanted to check on the specifics before I take the plunge.

Thanks,

Jeremy

I was interested as well until I finally found a review.

Looks like the region 1 is the best so far but with Manga releasing Ninja Scroll Special Edition later this year I would expect them to do the same with Ghost.

I wouldn't say the transfer is MUCH better, but it is better. There's some detail that is clipped in the shadows on the R1. The subtitle quality is awful, though. They have no borders and blend into the background very easily. Luckily, I've seen the movie enough and know enough Japanese to get by.

Edit: it also has the original ending music, which was sorely lacking from the R1.

Bumping this old thread back up.

Is the Japanese track on this disc 5.1 or 2.0? I am not able to access the link in dvdasylum's post.

2.0. The soundtrack isn't available in 5.1 on the Japanese side. I picked up the laserdisc version since I last posted, and I will have to say that that is by far the best version when it comes to sound. Even the 5.1 track on Manga's DVD pales in comparison.

That said, the region 1 is probably the best overall version because of the subtitles issue. The region 3 has a slightly better transfer, but the subtitles do suck.
