... France = Region 2
... France = PAL system (incompatible with American NTSC system)
... France = Euro (not 'Euro-Dollars!')
... France = www.amazon.fr (for instance)
... France = some French movies on French DVDs have optional English subs, a lot of them don't
... France = some American movies on French DVDs have optional French subtitles, others have locked French subs
. . .

So the Euro listed on Amazon.fr is not the "Euro-Dollar" that was brought in at the start of the year? What currency should I select in the UCC to convert it?
I just tried ordering off Amazon.fr for The Big One and Barton Fink however, though I am Canadian and logged in, it did not deduct the VAT like the .co.uk site. Is that normal?
First time I've tried to order a disc not understanding the language so I'm a bit of a putz right now.
Thanks for any advice.

Beware if buying the French TF1 release of Barton Fink -as it's terrible.
It's due out on Region 1 this year apparently so it'll be worth the wait I hope.
Amazon.fr seem not to show inclusive (of tax) prices on their site -which would be against the law in the UK. Very annoying.
www.cinestore.com are almost always cheaper (and quicker) than Amazon.fr in my experience. They have a set shipping fee too for the EU (that's the European Union)

I was looking to get the 2 disc special edition of Evita...it also has DTS (not that it would matter considering it would be SPED UP DTS).
In any case, Amazon has it for what translates to $30. Bit steep...
any other ideas? Any reviews of this disc?

Does anyone know if there are any DVDTalk members from France? I would like to trade for a couple R2 France discs.

Although I buy most of my non-UK/Region 1 discs in France it's best to look too to Italy and Spain (and beyond!).
Evita in Italy has DTS and is cheaper. Check out some of my links for stores and price/review engines.
I found some great discs with a little bit of work. Many Italian/Spanish stores do fixed rate shipping -so buying 1 or 10 discs has the same shipping. Maybe worth thinking about doing co-buys too as it can keep the price down.

thank you digitalfreaknyc
finally someone who loves music and knows that the PAL speed up is unnaceptable when it comes to musical matters.
As for the italian Evita, yes it has DTS but compulsory italian subs too.

Does the speepup really make a difference in viewingpleasure?
Only if you're on crack. And what's a 'speepup'? Is that something to do with taking drugs?
I'd be very careful about assuming French extras are all in English (even if it's English speakers in the extras) -some are but many are over dubbed in French.

I bought mine from www.dvdgo.com Shipping can be expensive so it's best to investigate if it would be better to buy several items -or as I said above- do a co-buy with friends.
Tesis is available on Region 1 too but the transfer is not great. The 2 disc Spanish (+ another review here) DVD is very very nice -but as I said above the 2nd disc is all Spanish and no English. It's the transfer that interested me though.

The speedup is so amazingly annoying. Who knew that small a difference would cause so much aggravation.
I sometimes wonder what people from other countries would think if they actually saw the movies as they were supposed to be shown...at the proper speed. Would everything seem too slow??

NTSC has also its own drawbacks.

Also, CD's are sped up. So go take a listen to the Evita soundtrack and then pull the DVD off the shelf and take a listen.
Difference.

I get to watch a movie without all the actors on helium. To me that's not a drawback no matter how you look at it.
We're not talking about video quality here because I'm not about to judge that.
You guys are VERY lucky to have a lot of films in 16x9 over there that are non-anamorphic over here.
But the fact remains that I'd rather have a proper R1 speed Dolby Digital soundtrack than a sped up PAL DTS track.
