the US region 1 DVD is anamorphic even though it doesn't say that on the case.

How do you tell the anamorphic ones? Is there anything on the case or disc I can look for?

I've had mine for over 2 years and it's anamorphic so it's a safe assumption that any of them available in stores now are.

I had the Thing for a few years. I bought mine Kinda early, switched my DVD player over to 16x9 and nothing same ol' picture. I wanted to make sure it was NOT anamorohic before I sold it. Now I'm totally confused. The one I had was,nt Im sure, but did they slip it under my nose w/o letting anyone know. I would be jumping up and down right now if it was true, but im very confused.

The Thing DVD is non-anamorphic. There is no anamorphic transfer for this film. Those who think their DVD is anamorphic are mistaken.

i saw it on a widescreen HDTV and it's anamorphic. You can believe that or not.

My copy is most assuredly non-anamorphic. If you think that Universal has silently repressed the disc with a new anamorphic transfer and not changed the packaging or told anyone, the burden of proof is on you.

Play the disc on a 4:3 television. Set the DVD player for 16:9 mode. If the image is vertically stretched, take a screen cap and post it here.

Until then, I will remain skeptical.

I just got my new HDTV 46" and I will have to test my copy of the THING tonight, it was purchased about 2 months ago so maybe it is 16:9?!

Clearly not anamorphic. It looks okay at best over an HDtv.
Universal really needs to remaster this Carpenter classic.

For those left hanging after the last post in this thread, the issue of The Thing having a secret anamorphic remaster has been resolved in the following thread.

Read from this post on for the relevant info:

http://www.dvdtalk.com/forum/showthr...85#post3201385

There is no anamorphic master for The Thing. Some people were playing the disc on Mediamatics-based players that scaled up the non-anamorphic picture. That's why they thought it might be anamorphic, but it's not.

Sorry.

(I see that all of Codefree's posts have been removed from both threads. Interesting...)
