OAVs are basically straight-to-video animes, since they aren't shown on TV and aren't played in theatres first. Unlike US straight-to-videos however, OAVs don't have the stigma of being bad. Many OAVs are semi-sequels to a TV anime series, sometimes placing the same characters in entirely different situations.

OAVs can also be one-offs, or a series of odd length. One OAV I saw recently, Read or Die, consisted of 3 half-hour episodes.
