Well, to me it seems R4 DVDs are cheaper.
I purchased Conan the Barbarian SE and Crimson Tide SE for $35 shipped from down under, whereas the R1 versions would have been about $45 before shipping (Just picked a random retailer I have dealt with in the past).
Conan's only R4 benefit was a Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack VS R1. But, Crimson Tide is a whole different story, R1 was just the movie, and was not anamorphic, while R4 was anamorphic, and included deleted scenes and some making of documentaries.
So far, I have bought about 4 R4 disks, and they have all been cheaper and superior to their R1 counterparts.
A good site for info on various DVDs from R1, R2, and R4 is http://www.dvdcompare.org.uk
