Well, 95% of the electronics is manufactured in Asia for example Sony, Toshiba, Panasonic, LG, Samsung.... They are all Asians...

If they were produced in the States no one would buy it cause it'll cost too damn much as workforce in States are over-paid. Not only general electronics but even computers for example Intel they manufacture their processors in Malaysia and have it shipped to the US and Creative Technology (you know they make the best Sound Cards) is a Singaporean company. We can get cheaper computers here in Indonesia compared to the US.

Right now I'm using a Pentium 4 with 2 Ghz processor which I bought for only US$1'300.

Actually I just came back from a long vacation to Jakarta. The latest thing they have is flat screen TVs, but no widescreen or high definition TVs are available as of yet.

Gua beli HDTV gua di LA. DVD player saja masih jarang, tapi DVD bajakan sudah mulai banyak. Single layer sekitar Rp. 30,000 ($3.15). Dual layer Rp. 40,000 ($4.25) Kualitasnya berkisar dari bioskop camcorder sampai persis sekali dengan orisinilnya. Malah ada juga yang anamorphic!

Thanks for the link! Now I can join the party

BUAHAHAHA... sorry didn't mean to laught at you... well, not really...

let me ask you a question:
have u watch Zoolander? at the end of the movie, Ben Stiller was talking with the prime minister of Malay in malay language... correct me if i'm wrong, but it sounds like a crappy Malay... heck it doesn't even sound like a freaking language.
was it really Malay that they were talking about?

ok, back to original topic... ummm.. what was the topic anyway?

well, anyway, i know that DVD is growing in Indonesia... but like Iskandam said, the player still expensive & original discs too
bootlegs are evrywhere...

VCD is still dominate the market cause they're cheap & bootlegs too...

What are you talking about ? I just saw a new Sony 54 " PLASMA TV yesterday selling for US$6000 and that's a Widescreen HDTV. Flatscreen Digital 100Hz TV's have been around for the past 4 years here.... I think you've been looking at the wrong places... Did you go to Glodok Plaza ? There they have all those big PLASMA's in almost every shop with different brands. Tube widescreen was avaible here in 1995 but no one was buying it thats why they stopped selling tube widescreen... The reason people was not buying tube widescreen was due to the fact that they could not watch normal TV's on them as the picture gets stretched out... The last time I saw a Tube widescreen was last year when they were selling the Philips 34" RealFlat Digital Widescreen.

I personally preffer PLASMA TV's rather than Tube ones as Plasma's are thin and the picture is much-much better compared to the space consuming tube TV's. I have my Plasma hanging on the wall.

Even DVD players are sold widely here in almost all well known electronic center such as Glodok Plaza, Mangga Dua, Cempaka Mas, Etc. some of them are really cheap and only costs about US$100 (Multi Region). They even have the Recordable DVD Players here from Pioneer and Philips which costs about US$3'500.

I know of 5 shops that sells DVD Region 1 Original and 2 of them have been around since 1997 before that they were selling LD's.

I really think that you've been looking at the wrong places because everything is available here if you have the CASH to spend on it.

TUBES and SCREENS are the things of the past... PLASMA is the current hype here.

As I have mentioned in my previous post that the last time I saw a Tube Widescreen TV's (Philips 34" PureFlat Widescreen 16:9) was last year in Glodok Plaza selling for US$2'100 now shops there are offering only PLASMA TV's with a minimum price tag of US$4'000. I asked them why don't they offer the Tubes anymore and they said that the market was not that good for Tubes Widescreen compared to the Plasma ones which they can sell at least 1 peice every 2 days thats about 15 peices for a month.

So it seems that the latest hype here is PLASMA TV's and the same goes for Singapore market too (According to the shop keepers).

Every one in Jakarta knows Glodok Plaza and you can simply ask your friend to take you to that place and you can see it for your self. If you're buying Electronics or Computers and you're looking for the best price then Glodok Plaza is the place for you and if it's not available there you can be assured that it won't be available any where else as the Electronic Center in Jakarta is Glodok Plaza.

Wow I must be looking at the wrong places then. I didn't see any widescreen plasma HDTVs at the malls or even in jembatan Glodok. The only one I saw was in Bose's demo room at Taman Anggrek Mall. Most DVD players are region-free, with many of them capable of automatic PAL-NTSC conversion. But there's a lot of cheap knockoffs from China. Some sellers would simply stick a Sony, Toshiba, or other name brand sticker on the player and pass them off as the original!

Btw, are those plasma HDTVs the same make and model as the ones they sell in the US or are they specifically manufactured for the [South East] Asian market?

All plasma TV's are HDTV's (Multi System) and they can also be used for computer monitors. Plasma TV's do not have built-in tuners (at least my Panasonic doesn't) for television reception, speakers, stands, you need to buy it seperately. All plasma TV's have standard model number and it's the same every where and they are imported products.

If you want a cheaper one you could always buy an LCD TV which has a minimum price tag of US$2'000.

For DVD players I would recomend Pioneer as they are very long lasting ones and have good Optics, my one is the Pioneer DV-533K Multi-Region DVD Player. I don't like Sony DVD Players they are too troublesome for me.

You can visit the shop below ;

Toko Berjaya Electronic ;

Contact Person - Bpk. A Hauw
Glodok Plaza
Lantai Dasar/Ground Floor No.7-8,
Jl.Pinangsia Raya, GLODOK.

Tel - 62-21-62302507, 62-21-62302508

They've got good prices and the shop just just to the left of this one specializes in Plasma TV's and you can bargain the prices with them. Glodok Plaza has 4 occupied floors (Last Time I Went There), floor 1-2 for electronics and floor 3-4 for computers. There are a lots of shops there specializing in Home-Theater equipments including cables, cables-heads, room sound proof, etc.

As for the quality of electronics will depend on it's prices.... Good quality ones are available in abundance but with higher prices.

I gotta save up for my next trip then I'm sure a lot of people got all kinds of electronic products at "bargain prices" when Glodok Plaza was looted clean and burnt down to the ground in the May 1998 riots

Glodok Plaza is now completely rebuild again and it's a new building now... Most of the old shops there are back in business there....

You were right about the Bargain Prices in 1998 as shop keepers were selling good stuffs at peanut prices just to get rid of their stock pile... In that year I bought a Toshiba 54" Projection TV for only US$1'000 Cash and Carry.... Guess what ? That TV still works fine until today and I still use it to watch local television stations and Digital Satelite programs (Indovision)... he he heh e

The R1 choice in Singapore are quite huge and are retailing
at around S$40.00 to S$50.00. Some R1 DVDs are not allowed
in. For example Saving Pte Ryan not even a R3 version.

Some R3 version like Hollow Man,Resident Evil and latest
Black Hawk Down are in with cuts. I got my Hollow Man R1
thru a friend when he visited Indonesia some time back & it
cost me S$75.00

Sounds to me that S$40 or S$50 is a reasonable price for R1 DVD's. R3 versions are not worth the trouble and I don't buy them at all... I only buy R1 DVD's.

I have the Resident Evil R1 DVD already.... As a matter of fact I'm planning to buy the Resident Evil SUPERBIT Edition (R1 DVD)...

So, how many R1 DVD's do you have now ?

As for me I collect only Horror Movies and they are usually not available in Singapore...

Well I have close to 160 R1 DvDs and adding. I sold off some
titles. I ususally select the titles that I like

I am not a Superbit fan but bought Air Force One SB and most
recently Anaconda SB. The former I have the LD and the latter
none. I forgo The Patriot SB 2 discs coz I prefer the DD 5.1 RCE
version. Anyway the extras on disc 2 of the SB are same as the
first release

Well its time to spend spend spend again
