I wish to order these from a french dvd online retailer
Any recommedations will be welcome.
Preferably in English as my french is not very good.

two beautiful films, that take you to a different time and place. The problem is that no version is available with English subtitles, you can buy this, but unless your French is excellent, you won't be able to understand a word of whats going on.
I don't speak a word of French, but loved these two films, and to find out that they were on the same disc, was fantastic, but WHY no English subtitles. Was tempted just to get a feel of the films, but decided to wait, for
1. Me to take up French lessons
2. Say sod it, and wait for an English version
Mentioned this film before, Hendrik replied with a similar answer, his French must be good.

Well, there's Jean de Florette & Manon des Sources .
More dramatic (even melodramatic) since they are based on Pagnol's novels rather than the idyllic childhood memoires of Gloire & Chateau , but still set in the same wonderful landscapes and packed with top class french actors.
Not sure which are the best dvd versions, but there are certainly subtitled ones out there.

...and then there's a two-DVD release of the recent made-for-TV version of Pagnol's "Marseilles" trilogy: Marius - Fanny - César (anamorphic 1.66:1 - NO subs in any laguage, French captions for the hearing-impaired) ... sigh...

...actually, as these things go the production is not at all bad, but it doesn't hold a patch on the 1930s movie versions... he said, feeling ancient...
