Brother Region3 Vs. Region1

i know that the R3 has a DTS track but that appears to be the only difference. Having just watched the first 30-minutes of the flick, it's definately something i'm willing to buy again should the R3 disc have more in the way of an unedited version of the film/interviews et al.

Does anyone know the differences?

Thanks.

R1 version has been digitally edited and R3 version is fully uncut. Plus the R3 version is also cheaper I believe.

R1 VERSION CENSORED!

I had a chance to compare the Universe and Columbia DVDs yesterday night. R3 vs R1.

I only did a quick check but

The R1 has a beautiful transfer. Colors are saturated correctly and the black levels are nice. Looks like possible EE though. The R3 is a bit muted but typical for Universe.

Here's what I caught and didn't go any further.

At 35:15, the R3 depicts a nice (non realistic) gob of blood on the wall after a head shot

on the R1, it has been digitally erased and when I paused it, it was a pretty bad digital erase, you still could see where it was but now it was a muted blue that tried to blend into the background.

What a shame. The head splat was really cool.

Was that the only change? (I can hardly imagine it was... )

Is the disemboweling scene intact? (intestines in view and stuff?)

cheers,
Gabe

I didn't compare after the 36 minute mark. Sorry. Maybe someone else can FWD to that scene and let us know.

I don't know if the extras are exclusive or not, but it is uncut and anamorphic and the picture was quite good. The extras are a 48 min documentary called The Lifa and Cinema of "Beat" Takeshi Kitano. There is a featurette and some cast and crew interviews. The Movie is a Film Four release and not MIA. I think this might be the one to get if you want the movie.

This would be the region 2 (UK) Pal release. Deffo.
One of my brother's "friends" borrowed it nd hasn't returned it to me. Last i heard was he's in the US. Bugger.

yea, its FilmFour....

R[2] is the ONE to get! No doubt abt that then... kinda found it strange noone was mentioning it initially tho.... HongKong DVDs are infamously known for their compromises.... speaking of wic, i read in another thread that WONG KAR-WAI is re-releasing sum/all his earlier films.... Hope its better that the HK-Universe & MeiAh releases i have..... ANAMORPHIC???? dare i say, exclusive EXTRAS????? wic company???? anyone wif any news?

Back::
Tokyo Bullets(offshoot of MIA, yes) has been severely slagged for its lacklustrous treatment of Violent Cop... pity that B.TAKESHI's magnum opus SONATINE is going to be released by them... anyone owns the lovely FRENCH DOUBLE DISC??? by any chance would there be english subtitles? Any other comprehensible SONATINE DVDs ard..... Criterion's not touching it?

Don't forget about the R2 Japanese release!

Recall that there's also an R2 Japanese version released from Bandai.

A little light on extras:
- Making of documentary in Japanese
- 2 trailers
- 3 short tv ads

But what it does sport is:
- clean anamorphic transfer
- DTS track
- uncut and unedited

It might cost a little more, as Japanese releases usually do. But it terms of quality, I believe it to be the best version of what's available.

Yes, the Japanese version does have removable English subtitles.

If anything, Sony could release an SE with the unedited cut. With Sony owning the rights to the film, I don't expect there to be a Criterion or any other release for a while.

If you need subtitles on Sonatine then you will have to wait for the release from Tokyo Bullets. There are no dvds of this with Eng subs, so this will likely be it for awhile. I don't know if there are any vcds with Eng subs out there though.

This scene was also cut some, and other blood related scenes. I will sell mine, and keep my uncut R0 version...

Further editing, I noticed besides the judicious wiping of some bloody scenes. It seems a lot of the gunfire was edited out of the sound mix. The chopstick through the head scene was replaced by a blank screen (audio intact). The finger cutting was zoomed and panned so that you didn't actually see digit loss. The intestine scene seemed to have been panned above or slightly cut so we didn't see the dangle

Overall I am disappointed with Columbia Tri-Star once again... I mean what's a little guts between friends?

I wish Universe would do a better job in their transfers; but I'll take that one over R1 anyday.

There is a Region 0 disc of Brother? I thought there was only a Japanese version, the Universe Laser Region 3, and then this Tristar Region 1.

...not sure if anyone mentioned this yet... BUT... there's also a dts-enhanced, 114-minute, anamorphic release of Brother on French DVD-9... with 'locked' French subtitles for the English-language version...

...yes, the interviews are VOST (version originale sous-titrée)...

...BUT...

...parts of the movie feature Japanese dialog, which would, of course, have French subs... (similar problem as with the French Traffic DVD, where there
are stretches of dialog in Spanish)...

...sigh...

...don't know about the 108 vs. 114 minute time difference... however, the IMDb's 'Alternate versions' site mentions that the film was severely cut so it could be released in the USA with an "R" rating - - - now the British also like to snip a bit here, cut a little there, as you well know - - - but, in my experience at least, the French as a rule do not cut away at movies, so 'reason' would suggest that the French release is indeed uncut... otoh, according to DVDRama's review of the DVD, because of the 4 soundtracks the transfer is not demo quality...

...guess you can't win 'em all...

. . . . . .

Guten Tag Hendrik! Which version u getting?? transfer is not demo quality on the FRENCH version????? thats a boo-boo....
6 mins of UNCUT footage vs English subs for Japanese dialogue

Mais ma française n'est pas trés bon.....

i havent gotten my TRAFFIC yet. Isn't the R[2]-UK version the quintessential one? what about the French version?

...my tuppence worth of comments on the French two-disc release of Traffic is included in this thread:
http://www.dvdtalk.com/forum/showthr...hlight=traffic

...btw, I can't think of a single UK DVD release that is even remotely 'quintessential' in any way, shape or form - (un)cut-wise, packaging-wise, transfer-wise, sound-wise, extras-wise, or any old otherwise - when compared to, especially, the best French releases...

...that said, I do own a quite respectable number of UK DVDs - including British movies not available elsewhere (e.g. A Matter Of Life And Death), UK TV series (e.g. Lee Evans' So What Now?), UK musicals (e.g. Heathcliff), and even one UK ballet (Matthew Bourne's Swan Lake)...

. . . . . .
