[Review] Summer Holiday (HK)
Starring: Sammi Cheng and Richie Jen
Directed by: Jingle Ma
Year - 2000
The film: It's a cute little romantic comedy like so many others. Sammi plays a character she's so familiar with and if you've seen some of her other romantic comedies, you know what to expect of her (with the exception of Love on a Diet). She's a successful business woman who loses her job and her relationship in the same day... she decides to sell her half of a beach property that her and her cousin inherited only to find that her cousin had already sold his half to Richie Jen who apparently spends all his time drinking sunlight and swimming in the ocean and hitting on hot chicks.
City mouse and country mouse love story that takes the typical amount of twists and turns throughout the course of the film. I won't tell you whether it ended up happy or sad (cuz you never know and that's why you watch), but I will say that it was a cute little film and I enjoyed it.
I give it a 7/10 - I think it stacks up nicely with some of the other romantic comedies with bigger name leads for the men (like Tony or Andy). The locations are great - beautiful beaches and clear blue ocean. What a tough job that must be to make a movie in a location like this... where do I sign up?
The DVD: It's a decent release from Universe. Good picture and sound. Trailers for Tokyo raiders and Fighting for Love (I think). Sorry widescreeners - I don't know if it's anamorphic - probably not. Anyway - Universe provides quality DVDs for low prices. They seem to be a consistant DVD maker.
Final Thoughts - sorry I don't have more to say about it... it's just a cute little movie. Worth seeing if you like Sammi Cheng or if you like movies like Fighting For Love or Needing You (both of which are also decent flicks). It's not going to expand your mind in any way, but it's certainly "cute".

I kinda compare this movie to watching episodes of Three's Company. It's a great movie for watching when you're totally brain dead and just need to stare at the screen. Sounds like a knock on the movie but it's not.
