My vote is for The Piano Teacher or Baran. I'm Canadian and I've never heard of Atanarjuat.

If you're in the US, it's playing near you right now.

Here's my guesses for nominees:

France, "Amelie," Jean-Pierre Jeunet
Czech Republic, "Dark Blue World," Jan Sverak
Italy, "The Son's Room," Nanni Moretti;
Denmark, "Italian for Beginners," Lone Scherfig;
Bosnia-Herzegovina, "No Man's Land," Danis Tanovic;

Possible contender:
Iran, "Baran," Majid Majidi;
Canada, "Atanarjuat," Zacharias Kunuk;

2nd runner-ups possibility:
Sweden, "Jalla! Jalla!" Josef Fares;
Belgium, "Pauline & Paulette," Lieven Debrauwer;

Highly doubt it:
Austria, "The Piano Teacher," Michael Haneke
Colombia, "Our Lady of the Assassins," Barbet Schroeder

The Piano Teacher has a very low chance of getting nominated. Can you seriously picture those stodgy old Academy members watching explicit and disturbing S&M and liking it?

Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner is the first movie filmed entirely in Inuit (discounting documentaries).

I know, just giving my own choices. I thought Amelie was cute but not award-worthy. I think Baran by Majid Majidi should win to compensate Iran since they lost the Oscar to the forgettable Life is Beautiful over Children of Heaven in 1999. But then again, I haven't seen 80% or more of the nominees so I am biased.

I do remember that Canadian film now, missed seeing it.

You can bet that Amelie and The Son's Room will take 2 of the spots. You can also bet that you're not going to see 5 European films. So Atanarjuat and Baran have a good chance of beeing selected. As for The Piano Teacher, Grimfarrow said it, much too "risqué".

hey all. Besides Amelie and The Son's Room, I think India's "Lagaan (Tax)" has a good chance of getting nominated. It's been getting some good reviews in the UK and the US and has been generating a lot of buzz in the cricket world.

Columbia/Tristar's doing the DVD and will be releasing it in January 2002. Click here and scroll down a bit for more info:

PS - both Amelie and Lagaan are equally good and I would be happy if either of them win. But, Audrey Tautou better win the Best Actress award!!

I seriously doubt it. Cricket has as little appeal as Badminton in the US (ie., none). IMO, India stumbled big-time in choosing Lagaan over Monsoon Wedding - an award-winning film that has a reknowned director (Mira Nair) and critical acclaim. Lagaan is a popular film in India that can only be seen as a niche film in the US.
