[review] Funeral March
Funeral March
Directed by: Joe Ma
Starring: Eason Chan and Charlene Choi
Synopsis:
Yee (Charlene Choi), afflicted with cancer, decides to arrange her own funeral, as she has given up on medical treatment. She hires Duan (Eason Chan), a funeral director to oversee her wishes. As they start to get to know each other, Duan convinces her to continue her treatment. As Yee starts to see the value of life, Duan begins to slip away...
Review:
This beautiful semi-romantic drama, is a real tear jerker. Both Eason and Charlene does a really great job here, portraying a couple of gloomy souls. The story moves at a leisurely pace, which gives time to flesh out each scene. Although the ending lasts a little long, it makes the finale feeling true.... like you keep waiting for something to happen, and waiting, and waiting, and then it happens, and you still feel the impact, even though you are expecting it. Very well done...
The cinematography is quite nice, and most scenes are usually grayish in tone. It gives it a sombre and gloomy feel... perfect for the movie's subject. Even the actors are usually dressed in Black or Gray, or a combination of both.
The music is really great, using simple piano tunes. The soundtrack CD should be fantastic.
Charlene Choi is an actor with a bright future, continuing from her natural performance in Heroes In Love.
Recommended for those looking for a heart-felt movie.

DVD review:
The print is fairly clean, with some light speckles, but the image is generally soft.
Colours are vivid, although the majority of the palatte is greyish.
Subtitles are white with black border, and easy to read. They are on the black bar, below the image, unless if it spans multiple lines. English translation from Cantonese dialogue is very good, and has only occasional spelling and grammer mistakes.
Audio is clear, with some use of surround effects.
Extras: Trailer, Star Files for Eason Chan, Charlene Choi and Joe Ma, and non-subtitled Deleted Scenes.
DVD rating: 7/10 (image could have been sharper)
Movie rating: 8/10
