Indeed. benedict, I think it’s time to bow to the inevitable and stick this. Couple of weeks ago it was halfway down page 2 and the search function would not find it (and several other threads for that matter).

Do the right thing - you know it makes sense.

news from Italy

great thread, indeed!!

Visconti's "Il Gattopardo": anamorphic OAR, italian mono, english and italian subtitles, 2 disc edition.

"L'albero degli zoccoli" 1978 Cannes Festival winner by Ermanno Olmi, 2 disc edition, 4:3 OAR, italian mono, DD and DTS audio tracks, french - english - spanish and italian subtitles.

"La stanza del figlio" 2001 Cannes Festival winner by Nanni Moretti - and italian candidate as best foreign movie at next Oscars - alas, this one is a barebone one single disc edition, OAR video and stereo surround audio, english subtitles.

bhomatude 12-28-01 05:39 PM

I ordered "L'albero degli zoccoli" from dvdland.it for $24.58 shipped to the USA! Evidently it's a pre-order - shipping on Jan 16 2002.

I also ordered the two Bunuel dvd's "Los Olvidados" and "The Criminal Life Of Archibaldo De La Cruz" from dvdgo for approx $41 shipped.

I shopped around the various italian sites and these were the cheapest with shipping.

Fergy 12-28-01 08:52 PM

cynthia,

You forgot to add Rocky 1-5 is available in Japan in 16x9. It is not 16x9 in other regions (at least not in the US). Also, Network is also in 16x9 in Japan, but not in the US.

cynthia 12-28-01 10:03 PM

Fergy,

Sorry, I forgot to explain in my post why I didn't add those. Since those DVDs are in their original aspect ratios in the US, they don't qualify for the list. I've made some other posts in this thread explaining my reasoning for this decision if you're curious.

:)

bhomatude 12-28-01 10:06 PM

btw Cynthia - this is one of the most useful threads I've come across. Thanks.

benedict 12-29-01 08:08 AM

I'm temporarily making this "sticky" pending a holiday re-think of how to promote the various informative/one-and-only threads. The various thread maintainers will, of course, be polled/consulted before any changes.

codefree has provided us with a new list of anamorphic DVDs only available outside R1!

I bow in thanks, codefree. :D

Seantn 12-30-01 10:55 AM

Return of the Living Dead, I'm not sure which region though.

cynthia 12-30-01 08:55 PM

bhomatude, thanks for the encouragement. :) I updated with those Bergman titles you contributed.

Barry also pointed out some titles, in the anamorphic only outside R1 thread, that aren't available in the US which I added to the list. From R2/UK Convoy and from R2/Spain The Disappearance of Garcia Lorca.

I also realized I'd failed to add one of the R2 DVDs that I have in my own collection to the list: Mad Cows from R2/UK.

Seantn, Return of the Living Dead is already on the list--available in the UK. But if you know of another region in which it is available, let me know! :)

codefree 12-30-01 10:28 PM

cynthia -

Convoy is also available in France in anamorphic widescreen with English and French mono. I know cause I own it. ;)

Will be released on January 23rd in Spain:

John Ford's "Mary Of Scotland", see http://us.imdb.com/Title?0027948 for info about this movie.

Cynthia,

A small mistake in your list. Your listing for Wagon Master in the France section is wrong. John Ford's 1950 Wagon Master (- see http://us.imdb.com/Title?0043117 ) was released on DVD in France and should be listed, not the 1929 movie of the same name.

cynthia 12-31-01 11:01 AM

Made the corrections/additions mentioned. Thanks. :)

There is also a french version of this movie in the very good Studio Canal Classique series. Details here . Definitely no forced subs.

Strange that this doesn’t appear to be the 157 minute Italian cut, rather the 154 min version released on NTSC laserdisc.

Potential Spoiler:

The Italian version of the film, which has been screened at London's National Film Theatre, runs about 157m - the difference is that the climatic flashback scene runs about 3 minutes longer (only 30s in other prints or missing entirely) and shows Coburn getting jealous at the attention Warbeck is giving his girlfriend - thus giving a whole additional meaning to the betrayal sub-plot.

Of course it goes without saying that I am upset that this has no English soundtrack.

will_munny 01-03-02 03:45 AM

dear jonathan.e

this CVC edition of Giù la testa presents the cut first seen at Venice Festival in 1996.

BTW I don't know how much is related to this thread, but Cynthia could take note that "Kubrick a life in pictures" by Jan Harlan in R2 Italy can be bought as a single disc.

Tibor, it seems the best version available is the R2/Italian DVD.

This is the information Hendrik supplied for us:

R2/Italy - The Legend Of 1900 (full title: The Legend Of The Pianist On The Ocean)
directed by Giuseppe Tornatore / two-DVD SE of the complete, uncut version

I can add that Tornatore's movie 2 DVD edition contains 2 audio tracks, italian and english DD 5.1 and subtitles in italian and english. It's a true special editionn and costs circa €25,00
