? about the version of "Taxi" being sold by HKFlix

What's up with this version?

HKflix say that it's letterboxed, all-region (region 0), NTSC, with French and Mandarin audio tracks and English and Chinese subs. I never knew that such a version existed. Is the description accurate?

Has anybody else seen this version? Are the English subs removable and/or are they separate from the Chinese subs? And how is the overall quality of this release? I'd really like to pick it up.

Yes, this is an accurate description.

I bought both Taxi and Taxi 2 from DVDShelf in Hong Kong for $HK62 ($US7.95) and $HK75 ($US9.62) respectively - so I guess the $14.95 although relatively cheap, is still not the best deal.

Taxi is letterboxed and multi region with an excellent transfer, DD5.1 audio which is very solid, and removable subtitles - audio is French and subs are a choice of English and Chinese.

Taxi 2 is again letterboxed and has the option of DD5.1 or DTS audio - again, the subs are removable.

It may even be worth considering ordering from DVDShelf in Hong Kong - if you include a few other titles to maximise the shipping charge of $HK145 ($US18.50) for up to 5 items couriered, it is very worthwhile.

regards, Tim...

I've placed several orders with DVDshelf and the past and would be happy to do so in the future. The reason why I said that I had never heard of the version of this movie that HKflix is selling is because they're selling a region 0 version and DVDshelf and DDDhouse both say that their versions are region 3.

Do you really have a region 0 disk? If so, when did you purchase it? Maybe they used to have region 0 copies and only have region 3 now.

The HKFlix guy recently posted his direct email address towards the end of the Customer Service thread in the Store Forum.

the one on hkflix is listed as coming from a taiwanese studio "Forel". I have the region-3 release, which is by Universe.

Also, the cover images are similar but not exactly the same (check out region-3 cover on yesasia or hivizone site, vs. the region-0 one on hkflix)

there *was* a region-0 version going round earlier this year, but (a) it was 4:3 and (2) it was, ahem, "suspect"....so obviously that's not the same one as hkflix is selling (esp considering how good they are about double checking format and whatnot as listed on the box vs. what's actually on the disc. good show, that!)

it sounds simply like a studio in taiwan made their own release, which we've certainly seen happen recently with a number of films (hk, korean, french, etc.) so...maybe Mr. HKFlix himself will respond sooner or later?

I guess I'm "Mr. HKFlix". I don't know what reply you were hoping for, but yes, the specs for Taxi posted on our site are correct, and they were sourced from a reputable supplier... Anyone can email me directly with questions at [email protected] .

Technical specs aside, the movie is awesome, I always recommend it to people.

The "suspect" one was the only region-0 release of which I was previously aware. I assumed that HKflix found a different, legitimate one. I was hoping to talk to somebody who had purchased it - and not the region-3 version.

Oops, you are right, my version is Region 3 encoded... sorry about that chief! Having a multi-region player, I tend not to pay too much attention to the region encoding on any discs I buy... might I suggest you do the same

regards, Tim...
