Shaolin Soccer: New 112 min version?
I hear rumours that Shaolin Soccer has cleared for the China market, and they're releasing a special 112 min version of it to counter video pirates. So don't rush out to get the DVD yet... (if there is one available)

Shaolin Soccer
Release Date: April 5th, 2002
Hong Kong Release: August, 2001
Language: Cantonese with English subtitles. Title translates as Siu Lam Juk Kau.
Distributor: Miramax Films (picked up at Cannes; might be handled by Dimension Films)
Production Companies: Universe Entertainment, The Star Overseas
Cast: Stephen Chow, Lee Wai, Vicki Zhao Wei, Ng Man-Tat, Cecilia Cheung, Cheung Ming Ming, Law Kar-Ying, Karen Mok, Karen Morris, Alan Tam, Po Yip Tung, Patrick Tse Yin
Directors: Stephen Chow (God of Cookery, The King of Comedy, Forbidden City Cop; those first two were part of the Miramax deal at Cannes), Lee Lik Chi (codirector of God of Cookery, The King of Comedy)
Action Choreography: Ching Siu-Tung (The Heroic Trio, A Better Tomorrow II)
Screenwriter: Stephen Chow (cowriter of Forbidden City Cop, The King of Comedy)
Premise: An underdog soccer team uses their mastery of the kung fu arts of the Shaolin monks to defeat their opponents and achieve great victory.
Filming: Production started in early November, 2000 in Hong Kong, wrapping in March, 2001.
Genres: Action, Comedy, Hong Kong, Martial Arts, Soccer
Greg's Preview Thoughts: (5/16/01) Soccer movies, generally, don't do well in the USA, with a few in the last few years either having trouble finding distribution (A Shot at Glory) or just going direct-to-video (The Match), even when they've got name stars (Robert DuVall, Michael Keaton, Pierce Brosnan, etc.) What most soccer movies lack, however, are players who use the lethal ancient arts of the Shaolin monks to bring great defeat to their foes. There is a bit of a strange irony in combining Shaolin Kung Fu, known for its lethal arts (at least in the movies), and soccer, which has a tragic reputation for the mobs of fans that sometimes trample each other to death.
Miramax, seeing dollar signs in all things Asian after the success of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, is on a buying spree at Cannes (and elsewhere), so they were sure to pick this up (along with two other Stephen Chow comedies. Now, the question is... even with kung fu, does that do anything to entice American audiences into paying money to see soccer?
(10/12/01) Miramax has picked April 5th as their release date, up against Resident Evil.

re..
I have seen the test screening for SHAOLIN SOCCER. As far as I can tell, they just showed a print of the film the way it is, credits, music and original language. Of course they do this and than ask people how they should change it.
Get the DVD now. Don't wait. Disney\Miramax\Dimension is going to make it hard for those who live in North America to get this on DVD in it's original form. They have started already by telling online retailers they can't carry it. The same with Iron Monkey.

Shaolin Soccer or God of Cookery
Hey all,
I'm about to place another order (my second!) to HiviZone. I've never seen a Steven Chow movie before.
Should I get Shaolin Soccer, or God of Cookery? GoC is slightly higher rated than SS on imdb.com; do you think it's the better film?

I would say go with SS over GoC but that's just my troll like opinion.
I was a little disappointed with God of Cookery. Of his newer stuff I would go with SS or King of Comedy before GoC. Also the disc of SS just blows away the GoC disc in terms of extras and picture and sound quality.
Of his older movies you might want to try Forbidden City Cop , From Beijing With Love or Fight Back to School. The dvd's are so so in quality but are very watchable. The universe dvd of From Beijing is actually a decent disc. I don't get as hung up on the dvd quality as much as some other reviewers. Just as long as the movie is good and I can tell what's going on I am a happy troll. So far I have enjoyed every Chiau movie I have seen tho so I might be a bit biased

But starting with both of them GOC and Shaolin Soccer is a good movie, the first time I saw GoC, I watched it again. It was that good. There were tons of funny parts in that flick, it beats most US comedies nowadays. Just my .02
