HK Top 5?
Ok, I've seen a few HK movies, and I'd like to ask some movie-goers who have seen a TON of HK movies what they think the "Top 5" to get on DVD would be (Please exclude domestic titles like The Killer and Hard Boiled).
Thanks...
Dave

This list is going to vary greatly - just imagine asking this question over on the DVD Talk forum what the top 5 movies would be and you would get the same variety. You'll probably want to narrow this down by genre, by actor/actress, by time period or by some other criteria.
Generally and objectively speaking, in a couple of polls a couple of years ago, the top 5 HK modern movies of all time were:
A Better Tomorrow
Private Eyes
An Autumn's Tale
A Chinese Ghost Story
Fist of Fury

Re: Top HK movies
I'm a little confused. You say you don't want "domestic" titles like Hard-Boiled or The Killer. What makes these domestic? Are you from Hong Kong? Do you mean HK titles published by American companies?

Clarification
Sorry--- I'm in the USA, so domestic means aside from titles that are manufactured in the USA.
Dave
P.S. I'm primarily interested in action flicks, so if it helps you, exclude romance, comedy, etc. unless you think they are worth serious attention (because they are just THAT good).

But you asked about movies and not especially which DVD version would be the one to get. You can also buy HK-DVDs of "The Killer" or "Hard Boiled".
But back to the topic, here are my favorite 5 HK action movies:
Running Out Of Time
Extreme Crisis
The Mission
Downtown Torpedoes
Expect The Unexpected
Those were just from the top of my head as I don't have my DVD database at hand right now. But I purposedly excluded the all-time favorites from John Woo.

Regardless of whether a title has been picked up for domestic (R1) release or not, here are 5 of my favourites (in alpha order):
The Beast Cops - IMHO, Anthony Wong's best performance
Hard Boiled - Best action movie... EVER.
King Of Beggars - My favourite Steven Chow film
The Storm Riders - Coolness factor of 11.
Tai Chi Master - Jet Li and Michelle Yeoh!!!
Cheers,
-matt

Well I haven't seen many HK movies.. (10-15) so this is my top 10 based on what I've seen.
Iron Monkey (entertaining but rather short)
Fist of Legend (my favorite Jet Li movie)
Once upon a Time in China (Great Story...tension throughout)
Once upon a Time in China 2 (story not as good as first one, but beter fights)
Storm Riders (comic book type story, visualy stunning)
