I would want to help but I just don't have much info bout the region free players as you have, or want if we post. I don't know any technical details but I can give it a try...

I have a Philips 711 . There is no menu where you can change regions, it does that automatically but it can play RCE DVD's.

Well ther is one other i could give you the same amount of info about, but I'll have to check the name of the player first. All I know for now, It's a Pioneer.

Hope it helps you...

Did it come "chipped" or is it something you have to get done? Where did you get it from (and "converted" if @ a different place)? How does it look? Can it make the PAL->NTSC conversion?

TIA

The availability of multi-region players depends greatly on where you are. In NZ, for example, pretty much all players, with the notable exception of most Sony players, are sold as multi-region.

The downside is that all but the most basic models are quite expensive vis-a-vis the US - even the entry level players are not cheap

(oh, and there is of course the outstanding issue about the avialability of PAL-progresive outputting players.. )

Myself I've got a low end philips player (which is about to be replaced) which was multi-region out-of-box. No modification, no hidden menus or secret handshakes. Just plays everything thats been thrown at it.

(As for the ntsc/pal issue - Is it not the case that most tvs sold these days are compatible with both ntsc and pal? I would have thought so. my setup is pretty ordinary, but my TV, my VCR and my LD player are all capable of handling both pal and ntsc)

Alas, what we NTSC American's need is a player with a built in PAL to NTSC converter....The Skyworth seems to have some difficulties with that---or I could just be a real man and go find the service menu of my television and configure it

I bought it from a quite big store in Luxembourg ( Europe ). I didn't get it converted. Either it comes multi-zone directly from the factory or the store has it done before they sell them. The fact is that where I live it is hard to find a player that is not region free. For the conversion, I dont know...I would have to check in the users manual. Both my NTSC and PAL discs work fine but that could just be because the TV could play both ??? Maybe you can fine something on the net by searching a bit...
As for the look, it looks like this :

Thanks for the info. I did a little digging around this morning and it seems like there might be multiple versions of it. Some people were saying it worked fine others seemed to be having a problem w/ it (wrt regionless & NTSC/PAL). So far though the one thing I can tell is that it's only sold over seas (and it comes w/ a grey face plate too ).
