Here goes I find with HK films that I find nuances in them that make me like them more but these are all time best.

Prodigal Son
Drunken Master II (LODM)
Bride With White Hair
Tai Chi Master
Police Story III (U.S. Supercop)
Encounters of the Spooky Kind
Iron Monkey
Fist of Legend
Wing Chung
Dragon Inn
This list is a little Sammo heavy but what can I say he rocks!! As a choreographer, director, and actor/martial artist.
Basically if you get movies with
Donnie Yen
Jet Li
Yuen Biao
Jacky Chan
Sammo Hung
Michelle Yeoh
Maggie Cheung

This list goes to 11...

Ok. I'm leaving out all Jackie Chan, Jet Li, & John Woo films to try to get some variety.

-Comrades, Almost a Love Story - a moving romance with Maggie Cheung. It's got drama, it's got comedy, & even Hong Kong haters should like it. No flying people.
-Chungking Express - it's hip, it's fun, it's cool, it's art. I always hated California Dreamin' until this movie.
-Beast Cops - it has action, but I like it most for the relationships between the 3 cops & the women in their lives. Anthony Wong is amazing.
-Iron Monkey - fantastic kung fu/wire fu period piece (by the guy who did the Matrix fights)
-Naked Killer - this movie changed my life
-Full Contact - usually overshadowed by John Woo movies, I think this Chow Yun Fat movie is just as good. Violent with very entertaining, cartoony, over the top villains. My favorite Simon Yam performance.
-God of Cookery - hilarious Stephen Chiau film. See it now before America remakes it. (I think I read recently that Jay Roach is attached? Not sure.) Anyone who likes Iron Chef should see this movie. (though I hate Iron Chef)
-A Chinese Odyssey 1 - my first Stephen Chiau & still my favorite. a very funny fantasy with excellent make-up, fx, etc. The Monkey King, a spider woman, a bull king, & more. #2 is very good also.
-Mr. Vampire - hopping corpses
-Zu: Warriors from the Magic Mountain - fun family fantasy film. lots of color. nice fabrics.
& just to make sure I have at least one on my list that no one else has:
-The Odd One Dies - this one seems to end up in my player pretty often. It's sort of a quirky love story between a hitman & hitwoman - but not exactly.

I'd like to recommend netflix to anyone starting out & curious about Hong Kong movies. I joined last year for a few months & found it very useful in figuring out what types of movies I was interested in. They had a very decent selection.

Oh alright, I'll also say my favorite Jet Li movies are Tai Chi Master, Fong Sai Yuk 1 & 2, & Hitman.

(OK, some of these might not technically be HK productions, but...)

In no order:

1. Once Upon a Time in China 1
2. A Touch of Zen
3. Peace Hotel
4. The Killer
5. Dragon Gate Inn (1966)
6. Shaolin Master Killer (36th Chamber of Shaolin)
7. Moon Warriors
8. Drunken Master 2
9. Ashes of Time
10.Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon

But I will admit I've seen very few HK comedies, romances or non-action dramas, so I'm sure my list isn't representative of the whole gamut of HK films.

I second, or third, or whatever with my comments:

Chungking Express: Faye Wong's rendition of Cranberries' Dreams is really cool (she's the sandwich shop-later-stewardess girl), even though I don't understand Cantonese.
Fallen Angels
Days of Being Wild
Ashes of Time: Artsy version of Crouching Tiger w/o as much action and with weaving multiple storylines?
Comrades Almost A Love Story: Nice mainstream-ish movie. Nice date movie.

Oh, yeah the first four are by Wong Kar-Wei.
His movies aren't really in the action genre, more artsy-cool.

All the WKW movies are considered to be good or great movies, but for the uninitiated, artsy movies are probably better served for so-called advanced HK-movie viewers. His movies make you think a lot and are generally hard to understand the gist/plot of the movie. With trying to enjoy the movie, understand subtitles/language, and think at the same time, it may be much for the beginning moviegoer. JMO.

Of course, many of the films listed already are awesome...

But I'm really surprised no one has mentioned the Young & Dangerous series! I think it's really pretty cool, definitely worthy of inclusion in an HK recommended list. I think almost anything directed by Andrew Lau is going to be impressive. The Duel, Legend Of Speed, Y&D, Man Called Hero... A prolific and talented director.

Also, keep your eyes out for films with Jordan Chan, almost always worth seeing due to his endearing acting.

This is an awesome thread guys. I have Hard Boiled and The Killer which I purchased from Buy.com a few months ago for a great price. Which should I see first?

Did a search and came up with this great thread. It's a few years old, so I figure I'd give it a little bump to see of there might be some updates or new opinions.
