Pioneer DV-535K does not play some R2 titles

I am a Brit living in Hong Kong, and purchased a Pioneer DV-535K from Fortress (HK equivalent of Dixons - a large chain of electrical stores). The player is fine, and plays most R1, R2 & R3 titles without any problem.
On a recent trip to the UK I purchased two VCI R2 disks, and neither will play - they both show the VCI intro and then the background to the menu but that's it.
I have a DVD-ROM (NEC DV-5700A) on my PC, which is *now* region-free, and plays both titles without problem.
Other R2 titles I purchased work OK.
The titles are 'Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends' and 'Ali Gi Aiii'.
Any ideas?
