I was thinking about all the free magazine subs the other day and I figure that they don't lose too much money off of the free subs because they are just trying to increase their subscription base / circulation numbers to attract MORE advertising. They really make their money off of the ads and not so much the subscriptions IMO.

You are correct. My former G/F runs a magazine and she tells me she loses money on subscribers... (although her magazine isn't that profitable yet...LOL) The freebies she gives out help attract advertisers which pays the bills.
