DVD Talk Platinum Edition
I've done a handful of eMusic trials. No catch, just don't forget to cancel before your month is over.
Before anyone complains, I just want to point out that eMusic doesn't have all of the most popular music, they have more indie stuff. So, they definitely have good stuff there, it just might be stuff you never heard of

I never have a problem using all of my free selections on EMusic.
Last night I downloaded live shows by Johnny Cash and Roy Orbison, some Blind Willie McTell, a Lewis Black comedy album, a Lead Belly album and some Ludwig Van.

Well, similar to BMG's music membership, it could be that the company doesn't mind that much. Let's think about this quickly. Just because recycling accounts is not what BMG wants every member to do, doesn't mean that one shouldn't go ahead and take advantage of a good deal. No abuse as far as I can see.

"Oh, sure. I'm sure giving out free music without getting anything in return is just as they've written up their business model."
I don't care what the company's business model is. If you do, maybe you should go work for them.
Recycling accounts is not illegal, and if it against their wishes, they won't allow it. Period.
Just saying.

canceling was a breeze as well, thanks OP.

I liked it a lot more when it was $9.99 per month for unlimited downloads. Going from unlimited downloads to 40 for $9.99 was a bitter pill to swallow, and I totally altered my download pattern to only grab stuff I knew I would like, since I suddenly had to contend with burning up credits and waiting a month to get more (unless I wanted to pay extra for booster packs). At the same time they changed subscription models, it seemed like weeks would go by without anything new/worthwhile becoming available. (To be fair, I downloaded almost everything I wanted during the unlimited days, so there wasn't much left.)
They've sorted out the content issue, at least, and it is nice that all of your previous downloads can be redownloaded for free, even if you cancel and come back. I still don't keep my account open for more than a couple of months at a time, though; even if the average album cost ends up being around $3, lala is cheaper, and you get the full CD. I'm much more apt to try new stuff with lala, too, since I can just turn around and trade it to someone else if I don't like it.
They both have their perks, though. I hate taking the time to encode MP3s for the iPod from my CDs, so eMusic has the edge there. Unfortunately, my iPod is dead, so I would need to burn the eMusic MP3s onto CD in order to listen to them in the car. Sigh...

I signed up for the 25 free downloads several months ago and cancelled. I barely was able to find 25 which suited my tastes and it took nearly two weeks. I guess you really have to take chances on these obscure, indie artists.
I can't imagine how long it would take me to find 100 decent tracks...

Need recommendations Dan? Mention what type of music you frequently listen to and I am sure that there are several bands that can be suitable for your credit use. Right away I must exhort you to get Arcade Fire's Funeral and Neon Bible, arguably albums of the year when released.

Thank you for your suggestions, I grabbed A couple Cat Power tunes, then some Neko Case - absolutely loved her and ended up downloading the entire New Pornographers catelogue they had avail.
