Try Ross clothing stores if you have any in your area. They have all kinds of non-clothing items; mine has a small section with fitness equipment, including yoga mats in the $5-10 range.

I got a fitness mat at Sam's Club. They're 2x2 squares that lock together to whatever shape and size you want. I believe I paid about $18 per package of 8 2x2 squares.

I've got an 8x8 area put together under a weight bench and exercise bike, and have been very happy with them. Maybe they aren't quite what you're looking for though...
