Good Guys in California Closing

All California Good Guys stores close, while home entertainment products and expertise expand within CompUSA locations.
Store closings mean huge savings!

These store closings mean huge savings for customers in Good Guys locations, where you’ll find the best in high-end entertainment products, including televisions, video, home audio, cameras and car stereos -- all available with steep discounts.
http://goodguys.com/canv.htm

There's a link to all the stores that are closing.

I stopped by one today, and it had a huge sign saying everything was 10-30% off....

Someone told me that starting 10/6 it may be even more.

They're going to have to take 50% off to make it worth a look.

Exactly, at 50% off, they might actually be cheaper than Fry's, Best Buy, Circuit City, etc.....

Good Guys charged 100% more than their competition? Not the ones near me.

I guess that's what they get for always finishing last.

Their return policy was so bad, I never went there again.

I was always able to negotiate prices at Good Guys, whereas Circuit City would only sometimes budge, and BestBuy never did. I'll miss them.

Maybe that was my problem. I didn't know their prices were inflated for negotiation. They just always seemed quite a bit higher than other places nearby, so I just stopped going.

Good Guys salesmen worked on commission, so you could bargain with them. At least the people in California got some warning of the closure. GG stores in Washington closed one night and didn't reopen the next day, they just posted up signs that the stores had closed. Even the employees were in the dark.

Going by that list, they must have already closed the one in Orange. It probably didn't help that there was a Circuit City across the street, and a Best Buy about a mile away for the last year.

With this move, it does look like CompUSA is trying to better compete with Best Buy and Circuit City by offering a broader range of products. . Good Guys by itself was really a dinosaur. It was the kind of place where you could go to get info on audio and video equipment you were interested in, make a decison on what you wanted, and then go to BB or CC to buy it for half the price

They had good service, but we're in a day and age where that just isn't valued as much as cut rate pricing and all-in-one-place convience.

Just stopped by a GG last night. There's a big sign on the door: "ALL SALES FINAL".

I wouldn't buy anything from them right now, even at a great price. What if it breaks? or you need to return it? or whatever?? Also, many of the products I saw appeared to be Open Box items.

I worked at that store in 1991-1993 and met a cashier there. We started dating in 1993, and got married in 1996. Just celebrated our 9th anniversary.

I was bummed when I went by there a few months ago, and it was closed.

One thing I liked about them was they carried some of the "lower high-end" brand lines and some of the higher end product of the same lines found at BB or CC. They carried high end products from both Yamaha and Denon, like the RX-Z9 and the DVD-3910. Stuff you could never find at BB or CC. Now Magnolia is the only place to go for this type of stuff and they are nothing but Best Buy with ties.

One of my local indie dealers wasn't sad to see GG go. He was not happy when they started selling Monitor Audio and were willing to sell at prices that he couldn't/wouldn't give.

You didn't get married in the store, did you?

But I hate negotiating (I'd rather have a fair low price and just pay it without playing games), and I'd bet most people feel the same. There was a GG near me when I lived in Palo Alto, but I never bought anything there. There was a BB next door, and it was painfully obvious that everything was cheaper in BB. The store always looked rather empty. It's sad to see people lose their jobs, but that's the nature of the marketplace.

These posts about the store in Orange are making me homesick, despite living in pasadena.. I lived about 4 blocks away off Chapman and know the store, the Blockbuster across the way, the awful Circuit City, The Chili Pepper's great mexican food across the street and the Fairhaven Cemetary where he got married. beautiful small little medievel feeling church. *sigh* .. oh yeah and the Good Guys there blew!! .. could never find anything I wanted and everything was marked up so high, you'd have to wait for last years product to get any decent deal.

Orange Store

What a commentary..remember there was an Adrays at one time along with the Circuit City and Best Buy...Adrays died first...I did buy actually a lot of stuff at Good Guys in Tustin/Orange over the years and negotiated prices.
Hard to imagine Comp USA making something work with electronics. I'll keep my eye on sales..though probally not worth it to buy anyting unless they drop to 40 percent off atleast..

Same here. I used to love GG but then they went "high end" and gave me the finger I never looked back. I hate to see people lose jobs, but Frankly, I'm not sad to see them go because I haven't bought anything there for years.

Went to one last night and they have had there sale going for 10 days now. Right now they are at 10-30% off very high prices. I stopped to look for a DVD burner and they didn't have any computer hardware anymore at all.

I was next door anyway so I took a look in over the weekend. Most things were 10% off and that just about pays the tax. They've had 10% off "sales" before.

Some stuff was 30% off but again, it was off very high prices and I didn't see a single good deal.
