Love it. Nicholson scared the shit out of me when I was younger. And the quick flashes revealing the carnage caused by the previous caretaker always gave me the creeps.

I don't hate it but I don't love... and there wasn't an inbetween selection.

If I had never read the book, I'd probably love it.... BUT having read the book before the movie was made, I have big issues with several aspects of the movie.

I was really disappointed when it first came out since it was so different from the book. Now, though, I completely separate it from the book and I love it.

Liked it, but didn't love it.

Where's that option?

He was one of the things I found wrong with the movie. Problem is Jack is supposed to gradually go under the influence of the hotel... but Jack looks nutso from the get-go.

The book was better, but I still love the film. Scared the shit outta me when I was younger.

I remember being afraid of the cover of the book when I was a kid. The kid's eyes were white and it creeped me out.

I didn't care for it too much the first time I saw it when I was younger, but the older I get the more I like it.

But boy do I hate Shelley Duvall!

Same for me. I love the movie but she just annoys the ever-lovin' shit out of me.

I think this is one of Kubrick's finest moments and this film will always be in my all time top 5 Horror films.

That topiary lion is so cute!

Seriously though, Loved the movie, loved the book.

They're apples and oranges (or best looked at that way) and are both great.

The movie barely resembles the book, and I think that's OK - tons of eerie style making for a disturbing disorienting flick, while the book is obv vintage King.

Two great tastes.

Re: The Shining

I didn't care for it growing up, since my friends hyped it up so much. Like an above poster, I'm in the "neither love nor hate" section.

Re: The Shining

I like The Shining, thought Jack Nicholson was great, didn't particularly care for Steven Weber in the miniseries (and it was WAY too long, although the topiary was cool).

Re: The Shining

Question: Would anyone actually consider taking a job like that? 5 months in complete isolation and eventually snowed in? And for argument, let's say internet will be spotty at best.

Re: The Shining

There should be a few more options in the poll.

Watched my 4K copy this weekend...I honestly haven't the movie in about 20 years. While I still like it, now that I'm a bit older and a bit more film savvy, I do have a couple big problems with the movie:

1) Nicholson - WOW does he overact in this thing - but it's easy to see from watching this why Tim Burton wanted him as The Joker
2) Kubrick is a hell of a visual director, but he drops the ball here with Nicholson's character - you're never sure how or why he goes from sane to psycho.
