4K UHD disc problems
Lately I've been having issues with the following discs (all from the US):
The Batman (pixelates and locks up on chapter 5, forcing me to skip to chapter 7) The Northman (audio dropouts and pixelated video on chapter four, during the high time chant/ritual just before the berzerker raid) Wonder Woman 1984 (main menu no longer loads completely, with the background image being a pixelated mess or a black screen, and the disc pixelates/skips and drops audio on chapter 7 and I have to skip to chapter 8) Hobbs & Shaw (as of today this disc no longer reads, despite showing no previous signs of issues) Denis Villeneuve's Dune (started with a brief audio dropout during the opening voiceover just before the WB logo, has now graduated to being entirely unreadable) These issues are the same on both my LG UBKM9 player and my Panasonic DP-UB820 player. Also, I looked under a bright light but find that there are no scratches, dirt, or smudges on the surface of the discs. Anyone else have similar problems with any of their 4K UHD BDs? |

Not that I've noticed. I don't own any of those listed so I can't check those.

My Panasonic player has a hard time reading Universal discs once I put them in the player. It struggles for a while(eject them and put them back in) but eventually they will play. Once in a while the movies(after playing for awhile) give me a problem(for no apparent reason) and I then switch them over to my Sony player.

I've generally had luck after switching to a Panny 820. But geez, my old Philips player was a nightmare. I could almost never make it through a UHD disc without some sort of pause or stutter (though traditional Blu-ray discs consistently played great).

I recently discovered that my UHD copy of Total Recall is defective. It glitches and freezes repatedly and won't progress through chapter 2 at all.

My Sony used to hang on half of the movies usually towards the end and wiping it down after that fixes it. I've started to look for smudges before I put it in now and that seems to have pretty much eliminated the hanging.

I have a Sony X700 that basically only plays SACD correctly at this point. It does play Sony and Lionsgate BD100 discs but no other studio or label. I bought the Panasonic 820 two days ago and I played six of the discs that I have had problems with in the past on the Sony and they played flawlessly.

My LGUBK90 has a tendency to freeze during playback...at first I thought it was an issue with the disc(s), but when I couldn't get the issue to repeat itself with the same movies, I realized it was a player problem. I suspect it's either an overheating issue with the player or perhaps a small about of dust or something on the disc itself. It doesn't happen every time I play a movie, but frequently enough that it's annoying (perhaps every three or four times I watch a disc).

Cut to the 820 and wow...massive upgrade. Extremely noticeable and the upscaling on my BDs and DVDs is also impressive. An all-region Oppo-BDP-103D was what I replaced after having it for what seemed forever. The upscaling on the Oppo was great but the 820 takes it to the next level. Kinda wish I had bought one sooner now. |

I just got back from exchanging the Avatar Way Of The Water UHD at Wal-Mart due to scatches. I won't be buying any more media from the again. The customer service rep said they couldn't even do an even exchage because it had been opened. I asked her how I was supposed to know it didn't work if I didn't open it. She argued some more and I told her to get a manager. Manager did the same song a dance so I asked for another manager. Same crap so I called Wal-Mart's home office in Arkansas and after explaining that I wanted an even exchange really slowly so the person could understand what I wanted she agreed to let me replace it this one time only. The register at customer service wouldn't even allow the transaction go through some one of the managers did it at a closed register up front. After I went back to electronics to get the replacement the manager noticed that it comes with a digital copy and then wanted to argue with me over if I had already redeemed it or not. I told him to open the UHD and switch them code sheets out if it bothered him so much. After another twenty minutes of him trying to get the register to let the transaction go through I went out into the parking lot and opened it and luckily all of the discs are scratch free.

https://web.archive.org/web/20160308...2-fff948300000 And, prior to that, in 2014 and earlier, there was an explicit carve-out that said defective pre-recorded media could be exchanged, one-for-one: https://web.archive.org/web/20141008.../return-policy But, since April 2016, the return policy was changed, and there are no carve-outs for media anymore, so it's treated like any other product. 90-day return or exchange period, whether opened or not. Maybe the people you talked to thought the old policies were still in place? |

Return policies usually end up at the discretion of the store's manager, no matter what corporate policy says. If you live in a high-theft area with organized shoplifting rings, expect returning media a real pain.

2 or 3 years ago I bought a disc at Walmart and realized I bought the wrong thing. I tried to return it UNOPENED w/receipt the next day and the woman at the customer service desk wouldn't allow it. Claimed movies couldn't be returned. I just stared at her in disbelief and while I argued briefly, I didn't care enough to escalate. It was <$10 and I just said I didn't want it and left it at the desk and walked away.

The computer system wouldn't even let the exchange go through. One the receipt bar code was scanned and then the item it came back and said that they couldn't do anything. |
