Discotek is starting a new tokusatsu-centric imprint.

Re: Toku Time

I wonder if the tape effects are the same way they did the effects work on Juspion. I assumed that was the same film/video compositing thing from Gamera: Super Monster, but maybe not.

Tokusatsu really just refers to special effects, so it could include more than kaiju, but I’m sure kaiju will be a big part of what Toku Time puts out.

Re: Toku Time

I just got Space Sheriff Gavan in the mail this afternoon. Haven't had a chance to actually watch it yet, but I did snap a few screenshots (directly from the disc) for anyone who's interested.

And a couple shots of the packaging. I wonder if they'll rework the Toku Time logo; it's pretty much an unreadable smear.

Re: Toku Time

That dragon/ufo "zord" and the lit up Gavan give me so much nostalgia... but when would I ever watch it? I still have Zero One sealed...

Re: Toku Time

And Shout Factory just released Kamen Rider Kuuga on Blu-ray, and they're getting back into the Super Sentai DVD swing too. Mill Creek has put out more Ultraman (as well as Gridman) than I'll ever be able to watch. Then there's Media Blasters, who's aiming to get the Heisei-era Kamen Rider movies on Blu-ray around Christmas, and presumably Discotek started the Toku Time imprint because they're looking to keep a steady supply of shows like Gavan coming.

It's great to see so much happening, but it's also rough since most of these series (aside from the more recent Ultraman shows) are 40-52 episodes a pop and have been on the air for 50 years. I love watching 'em, but I like watching other things too.

Re: Toku Time

I'm right at the halfway point of Space Sheriff Gavan and am having a blast. (Which is nice because I've sampled the first episodes of quite a few different toku series over the past month and was struggling to really get into any of them.) Especially in its first 9 or 10 episodes, Gavan has the most rigid formula of any TV show I've ever watched, but it works. Ridiculously incredible music, a really charismatic and extremely physical lead, and, y'know, a giant robot dragon with its own theme song. I'm at a point where they've added in a larger selection of music and are backing off on elements of the formula at least a bit. It's much too same-y to binge, but a pace of an episode a day is perfect for me. And hey, I instantly recognized the actress who plays Witch Bandora / Rita Repulsa in the episode I watched last night, which I guess is a point of pride.

I'm not sure how much Metal Heroes I'm in for beyond this, especially after giving up on Juspion twice now, but I'm glad I gave this one a shot.

And they are continually making new 50 episode seasons (well for Super Sentai and KR at least, Ultraman has shorter seasons not so much for Metal Heroes)

Re: Toku Time

Who would've believed we'd have two Kamen Rider sets coming out in the space of a few weeks? I just put in my preorder.

It's funny that both of Toku Time's season/series sets have villains who look so similar in Birugenia and San Dorva. The blue eye makeup isn't prominent in this photo, but:

Re: Toku Time

No new Toku Time announcements at Discotek Day today. Sounds like stuff is in the works but not at a place where they can show them off.

Re: Toku Time

I have a Space Sheriff Gavan box set (w/English subs) that I bought in Chinatown years ago. I love it, but sounds like an upgrade is in order to support this new wave of releases.

Gavan star Kenji Ohba's mentor, Sonny Chiba makes cameo appearances near the end of the series. One of the great things about the series is all the martial arts fight scenes Ohba does out of costume.
