Lord of the Ring & The Hobbit Trilogy 4K release December 2020???

I have been following Bill Hunt's news that Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit Trilogy are coming to 4k and could be ready for release as early as December this year. The release would include both the theatrical and extended cuts. I found this image of the steelbooks that are 4k only. I don't know if it will include a remastered blu-ray. I wonder if it will be more than an upscale? Did the CGI have to be redone? I haven't upgrade to 4k yet but I'd be interested if it includes a remastered blu-ray.

Well based on Hunt's previous posts about this as well as other sites, they've said that these are full remasters. And more than likely with remastered blu's. The picture looks like these will be Best Buy exclusives as well. I'll be happy with a standard 4K set.

LOTR on 4k will be magnificent. EE and theatrical in same package will be icing on the cake. I'm assuming, and hopeful, they'll be in Dolby Vision. My Christmas present to myself..

Doesn't look like enough to hold all the extras discs.

Then again, I've had the sets for years and have barely touched the extras, just a few here and there.

The EE’s will still be spread across two discs correct? Please excuse my ignorance about file/disc size.

I would say the movies will still be across two discs. Lawrence of Arabia was spread across 2 discs on 4k so I'd expect the same here.

Amazon preorder is now up. No release date yet. Bit pricey, but it'll drop.

Both versions in this set.

Gandhi was also on two discs. Both have spectacular picture quality.

It's very unlikely that any of the CGI was redone. That would be hugely expensive and time intensive, for not much impact on potential sales.

It's going to be remastered, new CGI and all. Samwise says so. December 1st confirmed

"Bottom line – Peter Jackson and the team remastered the entirety of both trilogies (and extended editions), including the special effects, to make these masterpieces of cinema look as amazing and breathtaking on your modern devices as the day we saw them in the theater."

Warner Bros. is also announcing that in the summer of 2021 it will be releasing a 4K ULTIMATE COLLECTORS’ EDITION with theatrical and extended versions of ALL SIX of the remastered films and new bonus content. Additionally, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the first The Lord of the Rings film, a newly remastered Blu-ray trilogy of The Lord of the Rings films will be available in the Fall of 2021, also including the theatrical and extended versions
So there's the double-dip.

And I will double dip, and add them to the big ass DVD and Blu sets I already have. Then die at some point in the future without never having seen all of the extras.

Those two covers aren't very good. Especially The Hobbit.

I like them too although I could do without that shitty white clip art sword they slapped across it.

I love the LotR trilogy but I never did finish the last two Hobbit movies. I need to make time to watch The Hobbit trilogy in full.

I'm not sure I liked The Hobbit movies enough to spring for the 4Ks. Of course, once they're released, I'll probably get them anyways.

I'll wait for the mega set then next summer. I have the theatricals on Blu, that will hold me over.

If the remastered versions are available digitally I'll buy them that way and get the new boxed set next year. Glad they are upfront about the double dip.

I don't want to sound too skeptical about this, but that quote does not come from Sean Astin's message. Nor does it appear that Warner Bros. has put out an official detailed press release yet beyond that video. The part about remastering the special effects seems to be something the OneRing.net writer interpreted from the announcement or is simply wishful thinking.

What exactly "remastering" the special effects means is also open to interpretation until such time as the studio confirms whether new VFX have been created or that the old VFX have just been upscaled.

Re: Lord of the Ring & The Hobbit Trilogy 4K release December 2020???

“Remaster” isn’t the same thing as “rerender”. Early 2000s era CGI will probably look sketchy upscaled but I would assume that’s what they did unless they specifically indicate otherwise. I’d also assume the whole thing is upscaled, since I doubt they rescanned the primary photography at 4k and recomposited upscaled CGI on top of it. More movies should do that.

As I understand it, there will be separate LotR and Hobbit 4K sets coming out this year. It looks like movie-only with both theatrical and EE versions.

Then next year, there will be a combined 6-film 4K set with new extras. And then later next year, they’ll do the same release of LotR, but on Blu-ray (the first Blu-ray release with both theatrical and EE together).

And they’ll all be remastered.

Definitely picking these up.

Currently, I only have the Extended Editions on Blu-Ray..

Hopefully the color timing is back to normal for Fellowship. I ordered both of the regular sets even though I am not a huge fan of the Hobbit films.
