Re: The Official Arrow Films 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

As Arrow’s description notes, AMERICAN YAKUZA was the first in Toei’s run of American versions of their ‘V-cinema’ line. What’s frustrating here is the fact that Arrow has done a couple of multi-film boxed sets of some of the Japanese films from this line, but this one gets a standalone release when at least three of the others would’ve made for an excellent box set as they’re all quite good as DTV movies go. I get that Viggo Mortensen’s early role in this is a selling feature, but the others are hardly slouches: Russell Crowe in NO WAY BACK, Virginia Madsen in BLUE TIGER, and (possibly) Michael Rooker in BACK TO BACK. The connective tissue on all of these is largely Japanese actor Ryo Ishibashi. I think BACK TO BACK may not have involved Toei, but the other three did, and would make a great combo pack like their other V-cinema boxes.

I immediately pre-ordered Hard Boiled UHD from OrbitDVD. I'm intrigued by the Samurai Revolution Trilogy. I've never seen any of those, but I'm a sucker for samurai movies.

A quick scan of the bonus features indicates Arrow’s HARD BOILED set includes all of Shout’s extras, but adds the other ‘archive’ commentary (from the Kino DVD, I believe?) with just Woo and Chang. The extras also list an archival featurette with Woo, Chang, David Wu, and Phillip Kwok (Mad Dog); I’m not sure where that’s from but those four did appear in interviews on the old Dragon Dynasty DVD, so maybe they’ve combined them? Arrow also adds archival interviews with Chow and Leung. Again, not sure of the provenance, but it might be neat if those were some kind of original on-set promotional material from Hong Kong.

Definitely in for this and CITY ON FIRE in the eventual sales. I think Tony Stella is a solid choice for the alternative poster art on these kinds of pictures. Hopefully they’ve given him THE KILLER and the ABT trilogy to illustrate as well so there’s some visual cohesion across the gun action pictures.

Also added to the Arrow Hard Boiled is a Dolby Atmos track. It's not something I need, or even necessarily want in a lot of cases, but I'm intrigued because Arrow doesn't usually add these things willy nilly. There's no way this is akin to one of those garbage 7.1 remixes that were on the HK Blu-rays. If Arrow is including it, then I have to assume it must be something someone put some thought and care into.

Re: The Official Arrow Films 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

^ Interesting. Didn’t catch that. It would be interesting to read reviews for that soundtrack. I guess it would have to be a custom thing, but I’m curious whether it’s just some better sounding version of the extant mono tracks, or some new full-on surround sound thing? And if so, I’m likewise curious how they would create something like that without spending much money for a boutique Blu-ray release. AI maybe? I mean, there can’t be much to work with in terms of original recordings, surely?

Those HK mixes were largely awful unless they were a n a film that originally had a proper surround sound audio mix in the first place (which was virtually non-existent on the ‘HK heyday’ era films, and even then they still sounded overdone and inauthentic to these admittedly untrained ears.

Incidentally, I revised my previous post to of that the bonus audio commentary in the Arrow edition taken from the Kino DVD is the one featuring Woo and Chang only. The one with them intercut with the other two guys (from Criterion) is in Shout’s set, and honestly, the Kino two-man commentary is way better.

That image is wrong, but part of me is disappointed that Red Sonja is a only a 4K release since it never got a blu-ray release in the US, but the other part of me is like "why do you care you wouldn't but it anyway?".

I don't know if they would release Mortal Kombat Anihilation as well.🤣 I'm not sure if I'd want to buy both movies on 4k or just stick with the blurays. Upgrades on the audio for both movies would be awesome but the very dated and horrible Special effects in 4k would likely look even worse than they already do.

The terrible Atmos tracks on Arrow's 4K releases for Conan the Barbarian, The Warriors, Barbarella, and other titles definitely suggest otherwise.

At best, the Atmos will be a reworking of some prior existing Blu-ray or DVD-era 5.1 remix, with sounds shuffled around a little more to throw an effect or two overhead, and then the whole thing excessively rolled-off and roise-reduced to hell and back.

The good thing about Arrow is that they almost always care enough to include the original mono track as well, and usually even prioritize it in the disc setup menus as the default audio option.

It could also be an all new mix created with the original stems like 88's Dragons Forever UHD. I haven't been following the title closely since it was announced, so maybe that information is already out there somewhere.

Interesting as the reviews I have read all give Conan the Barbarian stellar marks for audio. I thought it sounded great when I watched it.

I got the Under Siege 4K from Amazon. There is a pretty decent amount of bonus content. Andrew Davis is heavily involved in the content. Hell, they even have an interview with Erika Eleniak. Of course, Seagal isn't involved at all.

I'm a little busy this weekend, but hopefully I'll get a chance to go through it next week.

DJariya 01-27-26 07:55 PM

Re: The Official Arrow Films 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

I finally watched my Under Siege 4K. Solid transfer and a pretty decent amount of extras. I watched the interview with Erika Eleniak and she said she enjoyed her experience on the movie. But she didn’t interact with Seagal much outside of filming. She was more friendly with Tommy Lee Jones and Gary Busey. Sounds like Seagal just came to work, did his job and left.

I hadn’t watched Under Siege probably since the DVD was initially released over 20 years ago. It still holds up very well.

I don’t know if there is much interest and it was definitely not as good, but I would be interested in Arrow doing Under Siege 2.

Likewise. The old Hong Kong DVD and possibly a U.S. version of it as well. The remake was pretty blah, so it’s nice to see the original getting some love. I kinda wish some company had rounded up all four films in that (loosely-related) series – EYE 2, EYE 10 [yes, 10], CHILD’S EYE – but there was probably a mix of distributors that would make that unworkable.

It’s cool to see INNERSPACE getting the treatment, too, with some promising looking new extras. Odd that Arrow sees fit to issue that in both formats and not SOLDIER? They must have a pretty weird arrangement with Warner.

Also, the first GINZA BUTTERFLY movie is pretty good, the second is just ok, so it’s good that they combined them. Synapse had both titles on separate DVDs, so I’m a little surprised they didn’t try to upgrade them at some point.

Definitely in for THE KILLER, albeit down the road. Happy to see that they added the old Kino Lorber commentary, which wasn’t on Shout’s edition (I think that was the case for HARD BOILED as well). The new extras match the Shout set but the inclusion of the vintage interviews and featurettes does give this an advantage for completists.

Seeing talk on social media today that Arrow's version of Hard Boiled has very different color grading than Shout Factory's, with a lot of debate about which is "correct."

rocket1312 02-01-26 12:18 PM

Re: The Official Arrow Films 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

The comparisons that I've seen are all from the Arrow trailer and not the actual disc. That's not to say they won't match, but just pointing it out for clarity's sake.

That said, the bluer look of the Arrow caps looks more like the movie as I remember it. I think it's closer to the timing of some of the older dvds. But I've never seen the movie on 35mm, so who's to say if that's actually correct. As always though, I tend to trust Arrow more than Shout in these situations.

This is a weird complaint that I have had with Arrow lately. I get it if another company has the rights to and has released a blu-ray that is currently available, like with Lost in Space or Trick R Treat, but not with stuff that hasn't been available on disc since the DVD days like Red Sonja or The Eye it's kind of disappointing that they are not releasing a blu-ray version as well.

It's often cheaper to license a movie for UHD than both BD/UHD. Also makes production costs cheaper.

Arrow dropped a teaser on their social media accounts for another Enter the Video store boxset. The first set is one of my favorite Arrow releases so I am curious as to what will be in this one, will it continue with the Charles Band films or will it be movies from another company?
