There's an argument to be made that the set is too focused on Chang Cheh and Lau Kar Leung (and if that's the route you're going to take, why is Might Peking Man in there?), but otherwise they definitely knocked it out of the park. Day one. Can't wait. Give me volume 2 now!

They were rumoured to have acquired 50 Shaw Brothers films so it will likely be 4 Volumes.
In case you are wondering why I'm so hyped up about this release:

The guy who had been leaking info said it was possible they were going to be splitting it up.

Mighty Peking Man also happens to be one of the most widely released titles worldwide in the catalog on blu-ray. Since it's one of the ones not getting a new transfer, there's no reason to think it will be much of an upgrade over the 88 films version.

My only thing is if you're going to present a volume that is for all intents and purposes a "best of the best" of Shaws kung fu, Mighty Peking Man sticks out like a massive sore thumb. If you want to do a more varied set (which I'd be totally cool with) then go with it.

I'm really excited about Chinatown Kid since I watched a very poor English Dubbed VHS transfer online of the longer cut. It was still way better than the atrocity that is the present version that we have.

No argument from me there. I just want it to be a Region A release too.

That’s a shame… especially since you’re such a fan of this stuff. All the best releases are coming from the UK.

Oh, trust me I know dex14. The releases by Eureka and 88 Films of the HK films for the past few years have been outstanding. The one and only import that I got was the Eureka release of Drunken Master since that was a Region Free. After that, they locked it to B only.

Official announcement:
SURPRISE UK/US/CA TITLE: Shawscope Volume one (Limited Edition Blu-ray Boxset)
After an undisputed reign at the peak of Hong Kong’s film industry in the 1960s, Shaw Brothers (the studio founded by real-life brothers Run Run and Runme Shaw) found their dominance challenged by up-and-coming rivals in the early 1970s. They swiftly responded by producing hundreds of the most iconic action films ever made, revolutionising the genre through the backbreaking work of top-shelf talent on both sides of the camera as well as unbeatable widescreen production value, much of it shot at ‘Movietown’, their huge, privately-owned studio on the outskirts of Hong Kong.

I think I’m going to wait for a standard release. I’m not a fan of big packages like that. We’ll see if I cave…

Looking at it, it seems to be a similar packaging like the Zatoichi set. I'm okay with that. I haven't been buying physical media at all. This is just going to be my second purchase this year and I don't want to wait for their standard release if they decide to go that route.

Re: The Official Arrow Films 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
I'm so fired up for this box even though I already own 3 of the titles on blu. Of course the price I paid for importing those 3 almost equals the cost of this entire box.
I can't wait to see what's in store for volume 2. Based on the contents of this set (almost all heavy hitters and all traditional kung fu), I wonder if the second box will follow suit or if it will go a different direction. We know they have 36th Chamber, but I wonder if that would be a separate release. Trilogy set maybe? What I really want would be some early 70's Chang Cheh like The Duel, Vengeance or Blood Brothers and some Chor Yuen Gu Long adaptations like Magic Blade, Clans of Intrigue or Jade Tiger.

Over in the Criterion thread I'm talking about how I stopped blind buying their titles but now I'm looking at that trailer and I want to blind buy this big box.

Re: The Official Arrow Films 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
I rarely buy physical media anymore or ask for it as a gift (last big physical media gift I received was the Gamera Arrow set that I was gifted by my parents after I got lucky and was able to have my dad pre-order at Amazon when the set was less than $150, still thrilled I now own this currently crazy expensive set), but I might ask for this set as a gift. Pretty neat collection of Shaw Brothers films.

I still have a few boxes of the old Celestial Pictures region 3 DVDs and VCDs that I picked up on multiple trips to Hong Kong. I am interested in this box set with the newly remastered movies.
