The Shaw Brothers Shawscope Volume 2 set is now $104

I'm still holding out until it reaches under $100. I just have too much to watch right now and I can wait.

It's been under $100 at various sellers since the release. I got it for $94.63 in December.

Yeah I'm holding out until Amazon reaches that price point. It's just easier for me to order from them when it's available there and I get points on my Amazon Visa.

Re: The Official Arrow Films 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

Pretty sure some retailer just had Shawscope Volume 1 for around $70 - $80 in a recent sale, so I see no reason that Vol. 2 won't reach that price eventually. I don't think these are in any danger of selling out, despite how well done they are.

Blackhat has a theatrical version and international version on that set. I’m curious if the international version is the cut that aired on FX several years ago? I recall Blackhat wasn’t even really that good and was a box office bomb. Surprised it’s getting this SE treatment.

dex14 02-24-23 10:08 AM

Re: The Official Arrow Films 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

It's not the director's cut that was on FX, they couldn't get the rights to it apparently.

I tried watching it again recently and fell asleep.

Brian T 02-24-23 10:26 AM

Re: The Official Arrow Films 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

BLACKHAT was barely on my radar when I watched it on a DVD from the library, so I found out it tanked theatrically after I watched it . . . and actually didn't mind it, although not enough to bother with an edition like this. It definitely requires a certain frame of mind to get through, though, which almost felt intentional.

Sometimes it feels like the boutiques are running out of truly great stuff to pick from anymore. .

Dan 02-24-23 10:27 AM

Re: The Official Arrow Films 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

International cut shortens one scene. That's it. Honestly seems odd to include both cuts in that case.
Director's Cut restructures the film. It's still... Not great... But I recall finding it a bit more engaging, even if only slightly so. It really is a shame they couldn't get the rights. A 'restructured' cut exists out there on the internet for those willing to seek it out..someone took the theatrical cut Blu-ray and crudely stitched the scenes together to match the DC, more or less.

Re: The Official Arrow Films 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

Yeah I think that one is a pass for me. I didn’t even really like it and I love most of Michael Mann’s work. I’m not about to throw away $20 something for a special edition of a bad movie.

I still am. :)

And they know people will just keep buying these upgrades because the non-stop releases help to keep Bruce relevant and profitable. I'm sure it's only a matter of time before we see the rest of the Jackie Chan library (beyond POLICE STORY 1-3) recycled upgraded to 4K for another squeeze. By then an 8K Bruce box should be imminent.

And I'm sure these will look amazing, but come on, so do various Blu-rays for these 50-year-old films. I'm sure they'll find some new, never-before-seen private snippet of Bruce, or Linda and Sharon will sit down for their 278th revisionist interviews on the subject, or we'll get some new supplements from 'experts' rarely associated with Hong Kong cinema in the past, to justify the premium.

Re: The Official Arrow Films 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

What hasn't been released in the states is documentary maker John Little's recreation of the actual storyline for Game of Death that was supposed to be an extra in the A Warrior's Journey DVD from 20 years ago.

Also, A Warrior's Journey is out of print as a single release. I'd love to see that included here, but I'm sure there are rights issues involved for both.

Re: The Official Arrow Films 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

I could possibly maybe be persuaded to buy these again if the color correction on the Ritrovata masters (or will these be new masters?) and the audio tracks are improved over the Criterion, but the truth is, Lee's charisma aside, these movies just aren't that good. Fist of Fury is really the only one that totally works for me. Enter the Dragon is fun, but I presume it will not be included.

That said, if they include a proper HD or 4k presentation of one or both versions of Game of Death II, then there'll be something to get excited about!

Order Second Sight's lavish set. 3 cuts in UHD, each on their own disc. The only downside is that the dedicated disc of extras is region B, but there are no restrictions for the movies themselves. The standard edition is $43.99 at Diabolik DVD and $42.99 at Orbit DVD.

I'm skeptical that Arrow would sink the money into as expensive a title at this and not be able to release it in their home market, since Second Sight has it spoken for there. Arrow's US-only release slate has kinda dried up.

For everything announced or released year-to-date, there have been just four US-only (or US/Canada-only) titles; less than one a month on average:
  • January - Lady Whirlwind / Hapkido double feature
  • March - Black Sunday; Knockabout
  • April - The Assassination Bureau
Not a single one in February or May.

I can't imagine much of anyone exceeding what Second Sight has assembled either; at most, it'll be more of the same, maybe losing some extras and adding some others.

That Magic Eye slipcover for Mallrats is an Arrow Store exclusive. Fortunately, they've got the image flipped the correct way this time. When it was printed on the booklet cover for the previous Blu-ray edition, it was backwards (flipped horizontally, with Silent Bob on the left; the Magic Eye image is the Mallrats logo but it was backwards), and they didn't know because the booklet designer can't do Magic Eye images.

Re: The Official Arrow Films 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

Darn it. Didn't think I would need a new Bruce Lee box, but Arrow went all out on this one. New, non-Ritrovada scans and multiple cuts off each film including proper hd versions of both cuts off Game of Death II, (aka the best movie in this set)? Plus a whole lot more. Yes please.

The only bummer is that they felt like they had to include Enter the Dragon, but could only include the old 40th Anniversary blu-ray. What a waste. And it means that the Criterion set is still required for the proper hd theatrical version.

Also, don't expect Enter the Dragon to be included since WB is putting that one out on 4K disc themselves. The box mock-up still shows enter the dragon on the spine of the box.

Arrow has not released a full list of extras yet, but there doesn't appear to be much overlap at all with the Criterion. I assume all of the extras produced by Criterion will stay exclusive to that set and Arrow will have tons of newly produced extras in their set.

IMO the Arrow set smashes the Criterion to itty bitty pieces. The only thing the Criterion has over the Arrow is a superior presentation of Enter the Dragon.

Enter the Dragon is included, but it's only the same WB 40th anniversary blu-ray that's been available for a decade.

You're also missing that they list every film that will be getting a UHD, and Enter the Dragon isn't listed.

Currently it's about $148 USD converted if you pre-order this set now. Anyone feel like coughing up that much right away? ;)

Definitely not. I grew up watching Bruce Lee but I don't revisit his movies all that often. Certainly not enough to plunk down that much cash.
