Re: MVD, Synapse, and Blue Underground Releases Masterthread
I've fallen behind on Blue Underground's 4K releases. Have to remedy that soon.
|
Re: MVD, Synapse, and Blue Underground Releases Masterthread
According to MVD's website, there's no bonus material except a trailer for Desperate Hours. |
Re: MVD, Synapse, and Blue Underground Releases Masterthread
Looks like MVD also has MIAMI BLUES in the pipeline. No mention of special features, but like DESPERATE HOURS I have to wonder if the title warrants them.

Re: MVD, Synapse, and Blue Underground Releases Masterthread
I don't want to steal Rue Morgue's thunder by copying/pasting their entire article, but they've revealed the cover art and the specs for this limited edition (4,000 units) 3-disc set. Copies will be on sale at Cinema Wasteland this weekend, and Synapse hasn't announced when online sales will start. (But if they have copies in-hand, surely not long...?)
It's a loaded set and one I can't wear to tear into in full. https://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/imag...49378577_1.jpg |

Is Tombs of the Blind Dead any good? Good cover art, but I've been fooled before by cover art.

Tombs of the Blind Dead is available now on Synapse’s website and Diabolik.

So much for non-4K.

50 bucks for a bd only? No thanks! Watch them get ahold of a 4k scan just after this batch sells out.

Believe it or not, I've never seen God Told Me To until now. (In fact, it's the only Ultra HD title Blue Underground has put out that I can say that about.) And I've clearly been missing out, seeing as how I'd say this is easily my favorite of Larry Cohen's films that I've seen. I found myself immediately sucked in by the movie's combination of a gritty NY police thriller, the darker compulsions of religion, and...well, that would be telling, but let's just say there's no way you'll see anything in the final reel coming. It's my kind of bonkers for sure. God Told Me To is an even easier recommendation with Blue Underground's best Atmos track yet, a drop dead gorgeous visual presentation (despite some Panasonic/Dolby Vision hiccups), and a nice selection of extras. Highly Recommended. |
Re: MVD, Synapse, and Blue Underground Releases Masterthread
Great review, but GTMT wouldn’t even be in the top half of Cohen movies for me. I’m a bit biased though. He’s one of my favorite directors and I’ve seen all his pictures multiple times.
|
Re: MVD, Synapse, and Blue Underground Releases Masterthread
Bone, his debut, is the pinnacle of his work, in my opinion, but I'm far from a Cohen completist.

Re: MVD, Synapse, and Blue Underground Releases Masterthread
I want you...dead!
https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...7f19fb1fb1.jpg That's right! Uncle Sam is on Ultra HD Blu-ray with a drop dead gorgeous remaster and new Atmos remix. The good news...? This is a seismic improvement over the lousy 2010 disc. The bad news...? Well, it's still Uncle Sam. Hopefully you at least have a good time with my review. |

Blue Underground's first Jess Franco release in UHD.
https://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/imag...64824968_1.jpg We're pleased to announce our first Jess Franco 4K UHD upgrade is MARQUIS DE SADE'S JUSTINE, from a brand-new 4K Dolby Vision HDR master! New Extras are in progress, but we can confirm this release will also include the shorter DEADLY SANCTUARY cut in HD for the first time ever. |

I watched (and reviewed) Quiet Days in Clichy so you don't have to! It's still a repulsive, abrasive movie that kind of makes you question your faith in humanity more than you already are, but I think I might be warming to it just the slightest bit. |

Re: MVD, Synapse, and Blue Underground Releases Masterthread
Daisy von Scherler Mayer’s 1995 cult favorite starring Parker Posey comes to Blu-ray for the first time, thanks to a new 4K restoration from Fun City Editions. Parker Posey fans rejoice! Her iconic looks and trademark laconic delivery are in full fashion in Party Girl, which looks and sounds more glorious than ever thanks to a new 4K restoration from Fun City Editions. Daisy von Scherler Mayer’s film follows Mary (Posey) on her screwball-like journey from a life of late nights and hangovers to romance with a falafel vendor (Omar Townsend) and a potential long-term career as a librarian. This quintessential ’90s gem harkens back to ’30s and ’40s comedies while remaining firmly rooted in its own decade with its striking wardrobes and a stacked soundtrack that includes Tom Tom Club, Run-DMC, Deee-lite, Carl Craig and Ultra-Naté. Music supervisor Bill Coleman’s Peace Bisquit has made the entire soundtrack available on SoundCloud. Founded by industry veteran Jonathan Hertzberg, Fun City Editions focuses on reissues of maverick repertory cinema which spans an array of genres, with a unifying focus on forgotten and overlooked treasures. Party Girl’s Blu-ray release marks the first for FCE with its new distributor MVD, as well as the first title in their ongoing AIP (American Independent Project) series. FCE has previously partnered with distributor Vinegar Syndrome for releases of titles including Natural Enemies, Married to the Mob and Cutter’s Way, which we recently featured in our monthly Shelf Life column. FCE will continue to work with Vinegar Syndrome in addition to their new collaboration with MVD. Included on the Party Girl release is the 4K restoration of the film, undertaken fully by Fun City Editions from the film’s original 16mm negative, along with new video interviews with Parker Posey, Daisy von Scherler Mayer, Bill Coleman and co-writer and co-producer Harry Birckmayer. MVD will release the Blu-ray on March 28, with a limited edition slipcover designed by Jess Rotter. |

"This quintessential ’90s gem"...i've never even heard of the movie.
|
Re: MVD, Synapse, and Blue Underground Releases Masterthread
It's not unknown, to be honest, but now that FCE has labelled it a "quintessential '90s gem" and "more glorious than ever" a whole bunch of people will absolutely have to pre-order it on day one! ;)

For a few years in the mid 90's Parker Posey was THE poster girl for independent cinema. This was her first starring role and does have a fairly outsized cultural legacy relative to the size and financial success of the movie.
I think I have a fullscreen Canadian DVD of it, because in the heyday of DVD it didn't get a US release. From what I remember about it, it's an okay movie; but it's one of those movies that seems influential than actually a great film. And, yeah, in the 90s Parker Posey was really the indie cinema "it girl." Dazed & Confused, Sleep with Me, Party Girl, Doom Generation, Kicking & Screaming, subUrbia, House of Yes, Basquiat, House of Yes, Daytrippers, Waiting for Guffman. Then, in 2000 or so, she started showing up in a lot of mainstream pictures like Scream 3 and Josie & The Pussycats. |
Re: MVD, Synapse, and Blue Underground Releases Masterthread
My friends and I watched the hell out of Party Girl back in the day and would frequently quote lines of it to each other. It wasn't necessarily great, but it's very watchable and peak Posey. I think I might have even owned the soundtrack.
That's the first time I remember seeing Liev Schreiber; he stood out to me. Also the first time I saw Guillermo Diaz. Once they started popping up in other things, I always thought of them from Party Girl. Just because some haven't heard of it doesn't mean it didn't have a following. I'll be happy to pick it up and upgrade my DVD. It did receive a full screen U.S. release. |
Re: MVD, Synapse, and Blue Underground Releases Masterthread
I know y’all are excited for this title.

Re: MVD, Synapse, and Blue Underground Releases Masterthread
It will be cheaper than the Vinegar Syndrome version.

Re: MVD, Synapse, and Blue Underground Releases Masterthread
Everything I've read about LA Wars has said its absolutely shit but I'm guessing that's why people love it.

Re: MVD, Synapse, and Blue Underground Releases Masterthread
Can’t wait for this one. Sounds like a winner in the bonus dept. I think this was the first movie that showed me a sad ending and not happy, tied in a bow. I really love this movie.

Re: MVD, Synapse, and Blue Underground Releases Masterthread
Who the hell is Vince Murdoco anyway? I remember back in the 90s shit from production companies like PM Entertainment would try to make these stunt men or doubles as action star leads, The vast majority were horrible actors.
|
Re: MVD, Synapse, and Blue Underground Releases Masterthread
Exactly! Although in fairness, PM Entertainment made up for their cardboard (or has-been) leading men with fast-paced action movie plots and spectacular vehicular stuntwork and pyrotechnics. Their output hasn't been well-represented on physical media since the days of VHS. Some titles made it to DVD, but I don't think many have been put on Blu-ray at all. And a lot of them are better than the 'action' movies that boutique labels like VS do choose to release (like Don Wilson or Billy Blanks pictures). The PM catalog would be ideal for a company like MVD.
|
Re: MVD, Synapse, and Blue Underground Releases Masterthread
Speaking of PM Entertainment, I believe their HQ was located in a building/highrise that overlooked a tow yard in Tujunga (or Sunland?). My car was towed 20+ years ago and that's where I had to go to get it and I noticed the giant PM logo marquee on this building.
|
Re: MVD, Synapse, and Blue Underground Releases Masterthread
Wonder if they got their stunt car stock from there. By chance did your car come back looking like it barrel-rolled through an exploding tanker truck?

The Last American Virgin…this really looked great and the interviews are not to be missed. This is a gem I’ve always loved. Now, looks great and still feel Gary’s pain. Great flick.

So tempting, it would look right sitting next to Alligator on my shelves.
ETA: I am about to order this direct from Synapse Films website. I assume folks on this site have ordered direct from Synapse with no issues. |
