So which one of you came up with this list? Looks sparked off our recent discussion of the prices that Halloween box set goes for on eBay. I had no idea the Kung Fury BD is worth over $200.

I regret not picking up the complete Real Ghostbusters box set.

The Killer, Criterion Collection DVD I traded for on some old trading dvd site.But checked one time,and believe it was a very good bootleg copy I got.

Have The Third Man and few other OOP Criterions.

Eh...several of these "sales" are either over-inflated asking prices or for sets that are still sealed.

I sold my Real Ghostbusters set a couple of years ago and I had never even watched an episode but it was opened which hurt the value. I believe I still sold it for around $150 or so.

Same with the Marvel Cinematic set. I sold both of mine recently together on ebay for around $275. But that was both special sets together.

I had that Criterion The Killer DVD many many moons ago and sold it for at least $100 or more. And that had to be 15 years ago. I have the Hellraiser, Friday The 13th and Halloween sets and those will never leave my possession unless I guess they release a similar set on UHD.

That Kung Fury price is just stupid. I love that short and would love to own the BD but no way I would pay over $15 for it since you can stream it all day on YouTube. I wanted that Monkees set but decided to wait until they hopefully released a cheaper version of it on BD. I guess I made a mistake on that but it would likely have just sat on my shelf with so many other shows waiting desperately to be watched.

The Killer Criterion DVD has been going for about $50 on average for a few years now. Nowhere near $199.

Back when I was trying to complete the Criterion collection, the most expensive one I needed was that Tokyo Olympic one. Thought about paying $150 once, but backed out. It’s in the huge boxset now iirc, so I imagine the old DVD is way down in price.

I actually owned that Beavis and Butthead set. I remember paying $40 for it at the time. Sold it later for over $100. So I was happy.

That looks almost identical to a list ScreenCrush published back in August with a completely different byline. Of those:

• The Complete Sartana (which has since gone back in print, so it probably doesn't belong on this list anymore?)
• The Vincent Price Collection, Vol. 1
• Friday the 13th: The Complete Collection
• The Third Man (Criterion)

But I have a bunch of other rare ones, including Dawn of the Dead from both Arrow and Anchor Bay!

I have the following and was thinking of unloading a few but it's too much hassle especially being here in Canada:

1. Criterion The Third Man Blu-ray sealed
2. Criterion OOPs: Chungking Express, Last Year at Marienbad, Pierrot Le Fou, Army of Shadows
3. The Dragon Ball Z Dragon Box Set. All 7 Volumes with Volume 2 being the most difficult and expensive to get.
4. Battles Without Honor and Humanity The Complete Collection

The Mary Pickford Collection ($200 for the lowest used copy)
Faster Pussycat, Kill! Kill! ($1K for the sole copy available on Amazon)

I had the Pickford set up on ebay last year for half that (new & sealed) and only got a nibble when I took the listing down. A lot of watchers though.
Not ready to sell my FPKK yet. I'm happy my buddy from Vegas got a chance to see it when he was here a few years back. I need to watch it at least once more though.
Sold my AB Dawn Of The Dead for $20 last year. Even that didn't move immediately at what I thought was a fair price.

The first Twilight Time “limited” edition of Fright Night sold for $250. I sold two of the 3 I bought for that price. Also, the Harry Potter Wizards Collection monstrosity box set used to sell for around $1k. Now it averages about $650.

I think I have Harry Potter, last 2 in 3D and Ultimate Edition of last pak that I think is worth something.
An unopened and opened copy of The Third Man Criterion blu. The latter of which I got for free.

Iron Man Blu-ray SteelBook from Canada that is unopened. Don’t know if it still fetches a price, but it used to.
Star Trek Blu-ray SteelBook from Canada. Again don’t know anymore.
Sucker Punch DVD sized Blu-ray SteelBook from SDCC. Sealed, I believe.
Other SteelBooks from US, other countries that I think are rare.
I’m sure a few others, maybe think of another time...

I’ve been selling on Amazon Canada’s marketplace for over a decade. In part it’s allowed me to build a nearly ideal “permanent collection” that has grown much larger than I ever thought it could when I first took up the passion while acquiring and selling off titles I simply wanted to see but not necessarily keep. An American postal box allows me to keep purchases reasonably affordable, especially during the BF and blowout sales. I probably couldn’t afford the hobby if I had to rely on Canadian resources. Hell, I can barely afford it with American resources, but I have a lot more to show for it.

The painful part of this is the ever increasing parade of titles that inevitably go OOP, and up in value, especially in Canada, paired with my own inattentiveness when it comes to updating my listings on the marketplace. I might get $50 for a movie that cost me $10 way back, and just when I’m happy that I made a little profit that will fund some more purchases (or pay off the debt) I check the listings of other sellers for the same title and discover they‘ve been priced two, three, four times higher all along! Then i realize I was the fool “bargain guy” who probably gave a reseller a steal.

And Norm, I wouldn’t rule out using Kijiji, for example, to sell a handful of valuable titles without the hassles of setting up a marketplace or eBay account. Might take a while to find a buyer and get the price you want, but I think eager buyers (Canada-wide) do turn to the site for rarities they really want and will pay accordingly, or somewhat close to it, if you bide your time.

The Clone Wars Season 1-5 blu-ray boxed set seems to sell in the $250-$300 range now.

Don't use Amazon as a barometer for prices though. Ebay is the far better barometer. I find that on Amazon, if anything goes out of stock for just a little bit, sellers on there jack up the prices exorbitantly creating a false value/lack of availability. Once it comes back in stock, the prices settle back down. But this even happens on ebay from time to time depending on the length of time something is out of stock.

I have the Fast Pussycat Kill Kill disc. Had no idea it was so much but then looked at ebay and the last few copies have sold for the $115 to $150 range. Big difference from a grand. Hell...the damn thing cost $50 plus shipping new if I remember correctly directly from "RM Films.". I only got it because I was in a massive Russ Meyer mode at the time and said fuck it.

I had no idea that Russ Meyer uk set was that high. I remember when there was a super low price a bunch of years ago. I got three of them and gave two as Christmas presents.

He's not talking about that set. He's talking about the blu-ray release of FPKK that was done by the Russ Meyer estate a few years ago. It is the only RM movie released on blu by them and the only other one of his movies on blu I know of is Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls released by Criterion.

But that set you are talking about is running around $350 an up by sellers on Amazon UK. I would never sell that set unless they do a new one on blu.

I agree many of the prices on Amazon are just wishful-thinker sellers who place an outrageous price on an item in hopes a potential buyer is heavily intoxicated while shopping or are just using the free ad as a means to show-off their collection.

At least eBay displays what price items actually sold for and what items didn't sell at all.

Totally agree with this. Ebay doing that helps me as both a seller and a buyer. I know that something is going for a certain price and can decide how much I want to price something or buy something for.

It would be interesting if Amazon did this but I doubt that would ever happen.

Auctions on eBay from well-known and established sellers are usually the best gauge of a rare item's current market value. The number of bidders is a good measure for how desirable and collectible an item is on the secondary market. Take it from someone that regularly bids on rare and out of print SACDs, a niche field with a small but passionate following.
