So what's holding you back from 4K?
So?
Money You already have a perfectly working TV that satisfies your needs No interest in the format 1080p is already good enough for what your vision is capable of seeing You've invested way too much in BDs already. Any other reasons? and even if you have zero interest in getting 4K UHD discs, do you have a 4K UHD TV already and just stream all your 4K content? |
Re: So what's holding you back from 4K?
I think for me it's money and TV is fine the way it is. I did get a cheaper Samsung 4K HDTV at Black Friday last year but the difference doesn't seem all that noticeable, though I also don't have an UHD player, either. Everyone keeps saying it's all going streaming soon, but my Blu-rays always look better, but then everyone says Blu-rays are going away soon...
Eh, it's money. It's because money. |
Re: So what's holding you back from 4K?
I want 4k. I have a perfectly fine tv that does 3d and that's too big to really move to another room in the house, so there's that.
But the main thing is that I have to replace my receiver (which does 4k pass through but not HDR), and the HDMI 2.1 standard wasn't finalized and/or available on equipment. I didn't want to replace my tv and receiver and then want to replace it again in a couple of years. At this rate, if everything is settled (and I'm not sure if it is) I'll probably start upgrading in preparation for the next gen of consoles. My kid's playroom tv is dying (it's an "ancient" tv that only does 720p) so I've been tempted to replace it, so I may start there. |

I *do* have a 3D/UHD/BR player but only because it was on sale for far less than a comparable BR only player. I have no intention of ever utilizing its 3D/UHD capabilities. |
Re: So what's holding you back from 4K?
My Sony 42" still works great. I'll upgrade to 4K when it finally (or my bedroom tv) bites the dust. I have been picking up the 4K combo paks for the few physical copies I buy these days.

Re: So what's holding you back from 4K?
I have 4K, but am lukewarm on it since the format doesn’t do 3D.I will still buy 2D movies on 4K if they’re available on it, but I haven’t been blown away by them so far. The best side-benefit of 4K screens is the ability to do 1080 3D with no resolution loss- and I bought it when I did because of LG dropping 3D from their newer TVs, which will go down as the biggest screw-up in AV history. |
Re: So what's holding you back from 4K?
My 67" 3D 1080p TV is still working perfectly fine. When it breaks (it's over 10 years old) I'll go 4K. When the PS5 comes out 4K will be more tempting (even though I'd lose the 3D). But not now.

Re: So what's holding you back from 4K?
Already have two perfectly working Panny Plasmas that satisfy my needs. Impossible to sell, plus they are so hard to move! One of them doesn't even have a stand.

Re: So what's holding you back from 4K?
I don't have the money right now to buy a 4k tv and player. Once I do I'll consider it.

Re: So what's holding you back from 4K?
Nothing.

Re: So what's holding you back from 4K?
Reason not listed: Wife doesn’t see the point. :D That said, I haven’t pushed for it either as my current TV is decent enough. I have picked up a few 4K movies on disc and digital when the prices were the same or close. Fortunately a number of new digital releases now offer the same price. |

When I started into Blu-ray I told myself I'm just going to move forward buying only new titles in the new format. 1500+ Blu-rays later, many of them are up-grades. Granted, most of my Blu-ray collection was bought used for cheap ($1-$6 per title) but that probably still adds-up to over $5,000. I respect the ever-evolving technology but you do reach a point where it's "good enough". No matter what cutting-edge format you have, it will never be the best when compared to Digital Cinema Package. |
Re: So what's holding you back from 4K?
8K is already on the horizon, at least for displays. The hardware cycle seems to be accelerating as tvs become more and more of a commodity.
I think UHD is likely the last physical media format pushed by Hollywood. |

You simply connect the player directly to your 4k display with one cable and send the audio to your receiver with the other. Bingo, you're in business! :) |

Re: So what's holding you back from 4K?
Thanks to this thread and the TCL one I finally bit on a lower end 49 inch TCL 5 series tv for the kids room, so I guess I jumped in. Thanks a lot, OP.
And yes, I debated for a long time upgrading to a series 6, but 55 inches is way too big for that room. |
Re: So what's holding you back from 4K?
I’ve got 125” screen with a 1080p projector. I’m not to the point yet of upgrading my projector to 4K. I’d also have to upgrade my receiver. Plus, my disc buying days are slowly dwindling as I do more and more digital rentals. I still buy the occasional Blu-Ray when it’s a movie I really want but for the most part it’s just rentals now. |

Burnout + apathy

Re: So what's holding you back from 4K?
While I'm only running a 40" LCD (no 3D or 4K), it has served me well thus far.
My BD & DVD collection is 1,500-1800+ deep, so I'm in no rush to add another format to my shopping lists. I would like a nice 4K TV in the future but I want to wait to get a bigger place first, which I hope to do in the next year. |
Re: So what's holding you back from 4K?
I’m either gonna wait until Panasonic comes back to the US market or someone puts 3D in an OLED and makes the IR/burn-in a little better. |
Re: So what's holding you back from 4K?
It's still much more convenient to have a receiver that handles everything, rather than use separate outputs for audio and video. I wouldn't even be able to do that with my 4k Roku and still get the full audio from it. I will say that the 4k digital movies I've rented have been noticeably better quality than regular HD digital. I still haven't seen a Blu-Ray that was lacking enough in quality to make me want to re-buy it on 4K.

Re: So what's holding you back from 4K?
I've switched formats as many times as I'm willing to switch.
VHS to LaserDisc to DVD to Blu Ray. I'm done. 1080p looks fantastic. The upgrade in quality from great to a little greater isn't worth it to me. I've got my widescreen TV's (which I wanted since the late 90's), I've got HD, I'm good. I'm not spending more money on yet another format upgrade. |

I'm surprised how few on this thread have investigated 4K UHD...-confused- There is a lot of misconceptions around here. |
Re: So what's holding you back from 4K?
No interest in upgrading yet again. Most of my DVDs look great with this blu-ray player, the blu-rays look a little better (but the audio sucks). I have too much money wrapped up with what I already have, to think about another format. I'm happy with what I have now.
