Looks like the only reason to get this would be for the 4K transfer for the theatrical version.

It's actually missing some extras from the original DVD/BD most notably the multi-part Taking Flight documentary hosted by Mark McClure from 2000. It's also missing the expanded Special Edition cut. The Special Edition cut actually has Dick Donner's commentary.

Like the Matrix, Die Hard, and other recent 4K releases ... I'm just waiting for the full sets at this point.

supposedly the Dolby Digital (lossy) track on the UHD is the 'test' 5.1 (split surround) sound mix that wound up on one 70mm print during it's premier theatrical engagement.

I really don’t see them doing any 4K work on Superman III and IV. I highly doubt those will ever hit UHD.

But bring on Superman II to UHD.

I'm skeptical how well this movie's photography will translate to 4k HDR. It was shot with a lot of gauzy mist filters and diffusion effects.

Sure they will. Eventually they will be doing 4K scans of everything in their vault. The superhero stuff will eventually be on the new streaming site.

Which no one will buy into. This DC streaming site will be a hell of a hard sell, save for the fanboy base.

I'd be pessimistic about individual releases for sure, but I can imagine Warner issuing a big collection, scoring a double dip from anyone who already bought the first film and effectively holding II hostage to force purchases for the rest. (I wouldn't give that great odds either, though.)

Personally I believe a 4k of Superman II is likely. But like the original movie, just the theatrical version (with minimal extras) as the first individual release.

Opinion stated as fact.

Studios will create 4K scans of their franchise content for archival use if not anything else. They have always done that.

4K scans are fairly cheap to do today compared to 5 years ago.

It will probably go the same way DVD and BD went. More popular releases individually sold, then box set(s) wuith sequels, and finally cheaper separate budget releases when the format production costs are much less.

So the only commentary they release now is with Salkind? Fuck that guy.

The old release had Donner and Mankiewicz. The real heroes who created this great film.

They have to save something for the 45th Anniversary box set with all four films.

That's because the Donner commentary was on the 2000 expanded cut, not the theatrical cut

Sounds like the UHD is a winner, and a spectacular Atmos soundtrack to boot.

Re: Superman: The Movie -- 40th Anniversary Edition -- 4K UHD -- 11/6/18

Big, big news regarding the original Superman movie on UHD. The UHD released as part of the complete 1-4 UHD box had two semi-major issues which were never corrected...until now. The original 35mm 6-channel audio mix was missing, which had made it out on earlier Blu-rays. The second issue was a color error during the credits.

WB has silently reissued Superman: The Movie UHD with the original 6-channel mix in...5.1 DTS-HD MA. Which had never been released before in anything but lossy Dolby Digital. And the wrong color flash during the credits has also been fixed. Some were hoping the grading would be re-done but it's the same. For many fans the original 35mm audio is the only way to hear Superman.

The catch? The new UHD is only available currently from foreign WB versions released this year or possibly on the upcoming reissue of Amazon's 1-4 UHD SteelBook set.

Damn just a year after I bought the regular box set.

Is there a pre-order link?

There's a page on Amazon but you can't order it yet. Apparently the same physical set as their 1-4 SteelBook set but without goodies like the booklet/comic.

Some are hoping WB would offer replacements to the customers who bought the original UHD box. At least 3 of the discs have issues, including a disastrous audio track for Superman IV with the wrong score in place of the correct one.

Amazon has this set in stock of just the first four films. 4K Steelbook for all four movies. Original poster art on the cases. Looks like a really nice set. Only complaint is it’s $130 which is steep for four movies.
