Re: 2001: A Space Odyssey 4K UHD - 10/30/18
I saw the 4K IMAX version last week. Has the film always been a little soft looking? I noticed that whenever they showed HAL logo the surrounding text was extremely fuzzy.

Re: 2001: A Space Odyssey 4K UHD - 10/30/18
I saw this at a 4K laser cinema tonight. Maybe some of the color grading was off (I really am not one to say for sure as I've only watched it a half dozen times at best) but IMHO, it looked (and sounded) phenomenal. If the disc is the same, I'm pretty sure I'm okay with it.

This may be a silly question, but the BD is the same version as the 4K, right? They didn’t just pop the previous BD in there?

Ah, there’s a separate BD release. I’ll just go for that then.

The image of the back cover says "Restored and Remixed in 5.1 and Original 1968 Theatrical Audio Formatted for 5.1." |

Mine is also coming today. I pre-ordered from Amazon about 2 months ago.

Not sure those of who got already got it had a chance to see it yet, but this has to be the best restoration I have ever seen, even better than Blade Runner. Aside from the occasional moment or two, the entire movie looks insanely good.

When that Best Buy steelbook comes out I'm probably gonna sleep with it under my pillow for a week.

Re: 2001: A Space Odyssey 4K UHD - 10/30/18
Watched mine last night. First, it looks spectacular. But the disc froze while Dave was deactivating HAL. Then, in what I assume was an attempt to emulate one of this movie's Kubrickian jump cuts, the player suddenly skipped to the start of the "beyond the infinite" trip. Then it froze for good at a shot of the monolith floating in space.
What's weird is I then played this whole sequence again multiple times and each time it played seamlessly. So was this a disc problem? A player problem? Or what? (I'm using a Sony UBP-X700 btw.) |
Re: 2001: A Space Odyssey 4K UHD - 10/30/18
I believe there is a color flaw in this movie. I don't understand the technical methods that are used, but I can describe what I think went wrong. Something has caused a certain shade and tone of blue, in usually thin lines, to get pumped up and create an almost cartoon boldness. This is easiest to see when the landing craft is heading toward the moonbase. At 36:50 look at the craters along the terminator of the moon (the separation point between the moon's day and night.) Many of them have a strong blue nail polish look along some of the "highest" walls of the craters.
Earlier I noticed this in some thin blue lines like along the underside of the foot pads of the lander. By coincidence TCM just showed the movie. In this HD only broadcast this blue flaw does not exist. I also checked my Blu-ray disc and again this flaw does not appear. In addition, I recently saw the 70mm film projection at LA's great Cinerama Dome, 70mm film projection on the giant IMAX screen at Universal Citywalk, and a digital showing at a medium IMAX. I did not notice a problem (even though the Universal print was terrible) at any of these showings. I believe I can point out this problem easily, my bored daughter could see it right away when I showed her. I guess it will be interesting to see if anyone here notices this too. My plan is attempt to get WB to recall these. I know this is Christopher Nolan's baby, I'd love it to come to his attention. (Or am I just nuts?) |

I might recommend checking your display settings to see if the Dolby Vision encoding on the disc kicks you into a different calibration or enhancement mode than you typically use. If so, that could be adding artifacts.

Re: 2001: A Space Odyssey 4K UHD - 10/30/18
I have know shown this to five people. It is easy to see, especially when compared to previous releases. It's even more obvious at the 37 minute mark. There is no doubt there is a flaw.

Re: 2001: A Space Odyssey 4K UHD - 10/30/18
Please post a screenshot, link to captures on other forums (HTF, bluray.com, AVC, etc) which demonstrates the flaw. I've seen some talk of what seems to be this exact blue highlight on Bluray.com but I don't know if you are referring to the same thing or not.

Re: 2001: A Space Odyssey 4K UHD - 10/30/18
I just tried an experiment using my cellphone for screenshots, but it introduces its own mis-coloring. Is there a way to get screenshots from my player or TV? I would think you'd need a laptop with a 4k UHD drive. But if there's a way I'd love to get this out there. If that won't work I'm in Vista CA for anyone who wants to come by and have it pointed out. (No weirdos please.)
FWIW I've also turned off the UHD, this is just a low end Vizio anyway; it makes no difference--it's still there. |
