Re: Doctor Strange -- 2/28/17

I'm surprised there are any complaints about the 3D presentation. It instantly became one of my favorite 3D titles. I didn't find it too dark at all. The 3D worked so well that I couldn't imagine watching it in 2D.

Aside from Oldboy and the reviewer on blu-ray.com (and even that person didn't cay it's too dark), everyone else has confirmed it's a top 3D title. I really enjoyed it, and have watched the action stuff a few times already just for the visuals.

Re: Doctor Strange -- 2/28/17

man, maybe it is my tv? i swear i set it proper and others are brighter than this was, but maybe there is a setting i am not doing. brightness? max it out?

i did want to see it in 3D and still do because i am sure it is fantastic, but the darkness distracted me too much...

I was about to ask whether or not you used a calibration disc or something. Just eyeballing it doesn't really utilize the full potential and range of your TV, especially with 3D. And if it's a 4K, all the more reason to calibrate it. And no, "maxing it out" doesn't fix anything.

Just go to Amazon - or Google (yikes!) - and look for a calibration disc for television.

Disney has a really good blu ray calibration disc.

Thankfully I picked up that WOW disc when it cost a pretty low number of points at the DMR site.

The WOW disc is great, and that second disc has some really good funny cartoons on it. The Goofy one is an absolute hoot.

Oldboy, there's plenty of cheap calibration discs out there. Just pick one and start with that. Also, you can Google (Yes! Google!) your TV model and "calibration settings". You'll find that people list their settings for their TV's that will more than likely tweak your TV for the better. Find a couple and start with that, then adjust to what looks a little off to you. But you'll be tweaking all sorts of stuff you normally wouldn't do by sliding color and contrast - and brightness - upward.

Yeah, I'm not sure what's up with that price. I'm sure you can find it cheaper elsewhere. Looking at my order history, I paid $14.99 back in July 2014.

Here are some others you can look into

I wonder if the Disney one is OOP. The prices I saw on ebay were also very high.

Not the first time. I think I posted that the WOW disc was going OOP maybe 3-4 years ago. Since then I think it's gone "OOP" at least 3 or 4 times. Each time it's available again it's been about $30. That goes for the 1 and 2 disc sets. Who knows, maybe it'll be available again - or maybe not.

What do these calibration discs actually do? Will it truly improve picture quality from what is existing?

They help you identify proper contrast balance, color saturation, sharpness levels, and everything else involved with getting the picture right. The process will help prevent crushed or washed-out black levels, overly warm skin tones, and unintended edge halos, just to name a few bigger things.

The calibration discs feature things like test patterns and color bars that you use to properly set things like brightness, contrast, tint, and color levels. Some even come with color-tinted glasses that you use in the process.

It will, for example, put up a black screen with a gray shape in it, and you will have to adjust the contrast setting until it disappears. Then you will have white figures that you do something similar to to adjust the brightness.

Going through this process will optimize the picture quality of your set, so that everything is properly balanced so that blacks aren't crushed or washed out, whites aren't too intense, and the colors are life-like.

It's not an automated process. You watch the disc and follow the directions to adjust your TV's settings.

It is possible to buy automated calibration tools, but they require a color meter, external video processor, and expensive software.

How have you been a member of DVDTalk since 2003 without ever calibrating your TV?

based on his feedback on the 3D presentation of Strange, I'll wager he just used the basic settings and left it at that.

Well if your TV gets firmware updates, it's always a good idea to re-calibrate. And even after long uses, it's good to do it from time to time. I tend to calibrate about once a year. And if you get a hold of the 2 disc set of WoW, that second disc has some good demos of Disney movies. But don't calibrate once and assume it never needs to be done again. And don't hold out for the WoW disc. Any of the ones matty recommended are really good to own.

Do the people who pay for professional calibration get it done every year?

It really does make a difference.

But if the source is messed up it won't do a lot of good, like the extended Fellowship of the Ring blu-ray with the green tint and crushed blacks, or the Marvel movies with the funky black levels.
