Re: Ghostbusters (2016) - 4K UHD/3D BD/BD and BD - 11/11/16
I haven't seen this but heard it was also shown in theaters that way, which is absolutely retarded. Proper screens are naturally WIDER for scope (2.35), many new theaters letterbox scope movies (which really defeats the purpose of shooting in that format) instead and this movie encourages that. The instructions that came with it even said for theaters that have proper side-masked screens to play it in 1.85 with masking in.

If you ever watch it on a true Constant Image Height setup, you can just crop that extra stuff out anyway, so it wouldn't affect you.
Now, there's a legitimate argument that the 2D theatrical version should not have the extra effects, since theatrically, the 2D version wasn't meant to be shown that way. At some point between the theatrical release and this home video release, they made a choice to add those effects in the 2D version. If anything, the Theatrical 2D cut should have been left alone, but the Extended 2D cut is fair game in my opinion. There was enough positive feedback about the effects that the director (or someone he works with) decided to keep them in there. I watched the 2D 4K Extended version the other night, and I was happy to see the effects in there, as was my wife.
Again, my opinion is that all versions can (and maybe should) have it except for the 2D theatrical cut. But if your contention, as you've stated here, is that you "have little to no interest in any 2D copy of a 3D movie," then how the 2D theatrical cut is treated on home video should be of no concern to you.
As I recall, there's no 3D Extended version. So all the versions out there are:
- True Theatrical 3D release, which had the effects
- True Theatrical 2D release, which wasn't meant to have the effects
- Blu-ray 3D Theatrical release, which has the effects
- Blu-ray/DVD 2D Theatrical release, which has the effects (but maybe shouldn't)
- Blu-ray/DVD 2D Extended release, which has the effects
- 4K Blu-ray 2D Extended release, which has the effects

So much anger over a deliberate artistic choice. I mean, you're literally arguing against the director's intent, which goes against everything you seem to stand for.

I enjoyed seeing the effects extending over the bars when I looked over the 3D version but I found it rather distracting and not as entertaining when I watched the 4K version with the kids the other night.

Our family got a chance to check out the 3D version last night. The 3D effects were really good. And some of the effects spilling over the black bars didn't really bother me and sometimes were actually cool (like some of the bits falling off the proton streams). That being said, I didn't really enjoy the movie
. I didn't find it to be that funny and the characters were all over the place (for awhile there, I thought the twist was going to be that the blond Ghostbuster and Chris Hemsworth were both aliens from another planet). Anyways, I guess the 3D steelbook isn't going to break the bank or anything for $15 since we would have spent close to $40 taking the family to the theater anyways, but it would have been nice if we enjoyed it a little more.
BTW, has anyone checked out the extended edition yet? Can you give a quick spoiler on anything that it might add or change with the movie?
